Why I Will Never Be Naive About a PIP Again

Did you know that there's a certain HCM company out there that, if you beat your performance plan by 148%, they'll extend it anyways and then when a deal slips because your grandfather passes away the Friday morning before month end, they will fire you?

Let me tell you all a lovely story.

I have been at COMPANY REDACTED for one year, on quota for, what, 9 months? On a plan for 5 months. Oh and I didnโ€™t have a leader until February. June was my first month on quota with them. My manager got fired. They didn't replace him until FEBRUARY OF THIS YEAR.

Enterprise AE. 2-4 month sales cycles most times. 9 Months of Quota. 5 Months of a performance plan. 98% rolling attainment. 1 Month of Having a Leader. One Dead Grandfather.

Oh I was the third out of 5 to be laid off from that original team that had no manager for a year. The others were let go before me because they did not beat their plan (AGAIN, I was 148% of the laid out plan, by the way).

Like "cool guys thanks and also donโ€™t worry about my meetings on Friday this week I already found coverage on them because I am attending my grandfathers fucking funeral."

I had posted here that I was optimistic about beating my plan when it happened. I did beat it. A PIP is a death sentence. Thankfully I already have two interviews lined up for tomorrow with a competitor.

Nothing like a good WR rant to get clear of bullshit like this. If you were looking for a sanity or attitude check, you seem spot on to me. โœŠ

Fuckin brutal man. Sorry to hear it. Absolutely shit especially when you clearly tried to do right by this company and even though you came through they still fucked u in the end

This is why PIP actually stands for Paid Interview Period. Not performance improvement plan

Firstly, WHAT A LOAD OF SHIT.

Secondly, I'm truly sorry for your loss.

Thirdly, We all need to listen to Dan Goodman. PIP = PAID INTERVIEW PERIOD (periodt).

Fourthly, Fuck 'em, they don't deserve you. It's a bad market, and this sucks, but you'll find something better.

Fair, I will say you getting a severance is uncommon in a PIP so at least that.

Looking forward to the name drop

They gave you severance? Similar situation 200% of revenue goal, PIP extended only to cut ties with no severance and benefits ended EOD, though they were nice enough to give 30 days of COBRA lol.

Oh...that company. Sounds like a mess all the way around.
Also it seems that jumping to a competitor right now might be a bit....dramatic.

you were on a sinking ship and they put you on PIP to avoid potential Legal issues from just letting you go. It was inevitable.

Glad you're already hitting the street with interviews.

Really amazing point, and thank you for pointing it out! They had to fire my initial manager due to anger issues (there were HR investigations, I fortunately was not yet impacted by him) and then couldnโ€™t find a replacement and then fired the guy that hired him/ couldnโ€™t find us a replacement. We were all just screwed by them from day one.

It's great that you're getting outโ€”they never deserved you to begin with. You gave them your best, and this is how they chose to repay you? LOSERS!

Onwards and upwards bud. Wishing you all the best in your interviews!

Can I be the prick here? If your grandfather passing away caused a sizeable deal to push....it was going to push anyways.
I'd have no issue with a rep actually having a deal slip, or spending time with their fam. But using that as an excuse for why a deal didnt close in a 24 hour window seems wishy washy.
All that said - yeah no chance to come back from a PIP.

Find myself in the same boat. Closed 180%+ of the revenue goal for questionable PIP in the first place, but they carved out revenue goals for specific products and insane metrics. Still going for now, but working on outside opps for the next move. Not going to be sad to leave, will be a good riddance for sure.

Unreal! I've seen one or two PIPs shake out okay, but it's rare. Getting fired sucks, but you clearly don't want to work in that toxic mess anyway. It will feel extra good every time you steal one of their clients. Go, get 'em!
