Because it is sensitive af. It's MONEY. The only reason why any of this exists is for the money. The sales org is permanently on edge.
You get a toxic manager because their manager is on their ASS about the org aka the money. They project that on to you. "hey I need you to make more calls and close more deals!" (I need you to make more money).
Then your colleagues are toxic because you are getting in the way of their success (their money). "hey dude that was my lead!" "Omg can't believe they closed that massive deal, it was inbound and they did no work".
I've been in orgs that weren't toxic but that's like 10% of the time. This is just the reality.

I think it’s in everywhere in all Dept’s but to a different level of visibility and stress
It's one of the few jobs where your pay is directly comensurate to your results.

People do a lot of shit to get results they need in order to make money. Sometimes lines within morality, ethics and relationships are blurred along with the use of OTC and non OTC substances in order to dissociate/reassociate in order to achieve those results(i,e Adderall, alcohol, stimulants, downers, opioids, Marijuana etc)
It's a slippery slope and I've seen many sellers deal with these issues(I do as well). I won't deny that sales can be "toxic", but It's more causation than correlation imo. How you manage your stress dictates much of the time to what degree you fall deeper into the whole "toxic" environment.
I do believe it's important to acknowledge that Sales as a whole generally has a higher issue with substance abuse(Similar to IB,PE etc) due to aforementioned quotas and the stress that comes with it.
Regardless, sales has allowed me to make more $ than I thought possible as someone with next to no marketable skills after college. But I won't deny that there is an overwhelming atmosphere of toxicity within SaaS and overwhelmingly SaaS Sales/sales in general.

People take a lot of stuff personally. I get it business is hard but a mistake in shipping is not somehow an attack on you, let’s get through this together and everyone will survive.

It depends upon the salesperson's attitude and how they feel about the sales process. For some people, it may be toxic and for others, it is a challenge.

Low barrier to entry and full of former burned out athletes and people who were not qualified enough to get into more blue blood professions.
Maybe you are just soft? JK Idk why it is that way. I will say that in my experience is varies from company to company.
