Brutal, but as @TennisandSalessaid, you'll probably never get a peek behind the curtain.

Best of luck, check out Bravado Jobs and get back out there.

Good for you for asking, and I'm sorry you didn't get a straight answer.

Unfortunately, these things happen, but as you look for a new job, you can point to your performance as excellent.

Good luck!

You will never get an answer to this question.
There is a chance you made more money than others so you were more expensive to keep, or it really could have been random.

Sorry to hear you were effected by a lay off

Sorry to hear your situation. I do wish you the best of luck in finding something new and fast.

I don't think you will find that answer tbh. They can make up anything to determine lay-offs. They can toss it up to inflation.. blah blah blah.

HR departments are often very good at their jobs, it's just that they work for the company not for the employees.

I'm very sorry to hear that you were impacted by the layoffs, and with your success in contributing to the sales team you can hopefully find a new role without bosses willing to layoff high performers without reasonable justification.

Take her literally and not personally. HR exists to execute the will of your leadership. If you have bad leadership, they're going to be the ghouls that take the brunt of your frustration, and they'll happily do that to prevent you from thinking it's bad leadership that's the problem.

And what I mean by take her literally is that if she said it was dumb luck that they picked you to be fired: believe her. You made it on the wrong Excel spreadsheet because XYZ manager had to make deep cuts. Companies are downsizing left and right: this can all equate to having to make a non-sensical staffing decisions. If she didn't even have 5 buzzwords to rationalize laying you off even partially, it shows that there's not even a corporate directive to address the layoffs. Take this as a blessing in disguise.

You probably asked the wrong person as well : the HR Manager was just the messenger. She probably wasnโ€™t the one that singled you out. Therefore she has no clue as to the real reason you were the one laid off as part of the restructuring.

Truest answer you could expect from her would have been โ€œI donโ€™t know, X took that decision. You should ask him/herโ€. But people hate admitting they know shit

Go ask your manager, he is the one that didnโ€™t fight for you when asked to restructure

For massive layoffs:

The company need to cut people to generate revenue.

Your team was on that list.

For you, individually:

You cost too much money or your role was redundant.

Thatโ€™s it. You could be Jesus Christ himself. Itโ€™s all about money, and the sooner you realize the more peace you will find.

You need to understand early that HR isn't there to protect you, or your job. They are there to make sure the company is protected.

Do you know what minimum wage is? The literal smallest amount of wages to not go to jail for slavery.

Talk about wages with your coworkers. Talk about protections. Talk with everyone about things you need to do your job better.

As someone said before, they work for the company not you, so they obviously don't have your best interest in mind. They are definitely assholes.
