Will coding certificate/ boot camp help me find a job?

Hi friends,

I am currently year 6 of Ed-tech sales and would like to move into a SaaS tech sales role in a different industry. I had a lead with an awesome software company but was told I need more "technical experience selling to devops or IT".

Do you think some sort of coding certificate or boot camp on my resume would help me become more competitive?

I don’t think you need one to get into SaaS.

I have the AWS Cloud Practitioner one, it’s something to talk about in an interview if they ask about things you are doing on your own, but you can also do that without the course/certification.

I would do a free Udemy one if you do get one

However you don’t need one to get into SaaS.

Did you get your AWS one from using udemy????

Googled and saw one on udemy for 13$ (reg 99) but pretty sure that’s me falling for “a sick discount”. lol. Or from somewhere else?

No I forget the course I did, but I purchased the exam through AWS. I would check to see if it’s just the Udemy is the course to learn or does it include the exam fee

Thanks every this all super helpful! I’m kicking myself because I actually do have some of this experience selling to tech directors and assisting with technical/ security reviews but I did not do a good job of presenting this during the phone screen/ interview! At least I now know for next time :)

Keep at it! Interviewing is a skill that needs to be developed. That was a practice run.

Are you looking to remain an AE, or move into an SE/SC role?

If you want to stay an AE I really don't think it'll help.

1.told I need more "technical experience selling to devops or IT".

2. coding certificate or boot camp on my resume

you're not comparing apples to apples. if you need more experience selling to devops or IT, don't go code for 2-6 months.

change your narrative when interviewing to show you can sell to these people. Ed-Tech, I sold to Director of IT/Infrastructure/Security --> all my deals ran through a technical review to get over the line in the end. etc etc. flex your muscles, sell yourself.

Correct, you need to be able to talk to IT and know what's important to them. Infosec, architecture, how much their team needs to support the solution (preferably not), etc. You don't need to know what they do, you're not trying to get a job with them, but you will know what they need to understand about the solution you're selling.

Doubtful that coding would help you. I got some technical certs years ago - CCNA and Security+ - and they helped me land a job but I never really used them in the job.

It isn’t 100% necessary, but it could help

It definitely will not hurt. Anything extra, related or not, may help you in future job seeking. On the flip side, your resume might shine like a star, but if you can't sell yourself in the interview, you won't be competitive. Good luck to you!

It could hurt in that you waste time and money getting a skill that won't help you get a job.

Something I think is coding certificate might not truly give that backing to you in a sales career. I am not really sure tho.
