Wisdom Wednesday - Tips for free time at work?

I work for an outsourcing company where we are assigned our campaigns and upswell their product or services, every now and then a client leaves and we are in “stand by” while we are assigned a new campaign.

I’m at that spot right now. I have a bit of extra time and want to spend it wisely. How do you spend that extra time to grow professionally?

Well WR seems like a good suggestion. Also try to read up on your industry, read some books, follow some courses. Grab coffee with people from your network. Relax before the stress of the next assignment.

Play Jeopardy by watching on Netflix. Sounds silly but good way to burn time while learning new things 😂

Yeah, very few and far in between when you get a chance to do it but sometimes it feels quite satisfying to learn a little bit of something at a time.

Are you looking to be promoted within the company at any point? I’d identify a problem your company has and try to put together a plan to solve. I’ve seen a lot of friends rise quickly through methods like this. Obviously this depends on how much “free” time you actually have.

You mean, besides bravado shenanigans? XD Now seriously, I believe alot in investing in education. I love researching writing and storytelling skills as it helps alot in my line of business. Maybe you van find something to research along your own business and interests?

If possible, always have a book handy. I always have several in my phone because I'm a millennial and I haven't forgot my phone in a decade. Right now I'm reading Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss. Worth its weight in gold.

I can’t read books off my phone, the blue light destroys me, but I do have 1 or 2 in my office and a small library at home!

Whatever’s easy, the best book to read is the one you have with you. Fold it up and cram it in your pocket if you have to. Those little 5-10 minute downtimes I’ll build up.

I think there are two options with free time at work that help you grow professionally.

1) Aquire / Learn a new skill. Myself being in the tech space, I took an online course for python as it was something many of my clients were using and I wanted to be able to speak more of their lingo / understand what was truly going on behind the scenes.

2) Read. I know that a lot of sales books and self development books reiterate much of the same material, but that doesn't mean you can't find a book on a different topic or skill you want to develop.

Regardless of profession, passion or interest... a lot of great (free/cheap) on line improvement courses.  We have a University here that offered free skill courses that have been really fun.
Idea for consideration, appreciate not everyone likes to do "course work" on free time.

Look into certifications or classes that can benefit your role.  During covid, things slowed down and I couldn't go anywhere.  I took the opportunity to sign up for a class, leading to some more certifications.  The company might expense it for you!
