Women in Sales: Appropriate Dress Code

Chron.com published the following article on "How to be a good Saleswoman." https://smallbusiness.chron.com/good-saleswoman-25258.html

I was shocked that the very first thing listed was:

Earn respect as a businesswoman by wearing the appropriate clothing. Wear a fitted pant or dress suit in a solid color such as navy, black or gray. Choose skirt lengths that don't rise above the knee or fall past two inches below the knee. Wear short-sleeved or long-sleeved shirts; never sleeveless or spaghetti string tops. Keep jewelry to a minimum, and wear your hair in a classic hairstyle such as a sleek ponytail or bun. Finish the outfit with closed toe shoes at a medium heel height.

This form of thinking is outdated and obsolete in most industries, but especially in Sales. Women in sales should be able to express themselves in colors other than navy, black or gray.

Here is another example of a corporate dress code that is more reasonable https://www.boehringer-ingelheim.us/sites/us/files/fs_guidelines_for_dress_and_appearance.pdf

Given the global pandemic - WHAT do you consider appropriate? Do you get dressed for work or are you more casual in a t-shirt and jeans with a ponytail.

It depends on the client and their culture.  My rule of thumb is to dress in a way that the 'eye' focuses on my face and what I'm saying not on what I'm wearing or other parts of my body ;).

just as some cultures interpret being late as a sign of disrespect, some people interpret casually dressed salespeople as a sign of not valuing the customer relationship, the sale, and signals that post-purchase relationships will not be taken seriously.

As you dress think about how you look through the eyes of your prospect and what that signals to them.

These days, I dress up when I work from home sometimes just to keep my sanity.

I also like to dress up before big closing calls because it makes me feel more confident, but maybe that's just me being crazy 💁🏻‍♀️

Wow that is the dumbest description ever. I actually sell better when I wear sleeveless shirts.

I will say that pre-pandemic, leggings & a shirt were good for me. Post-pandemic, I love getting dressed. I bought so many clothes in the past year that I had no where to wear so now I'm like WOW LOOK HOW GOOD I LOOK.

But when I'm not at work and on the one day a week I work from home, it's messy bun, shorts & a tshirt still.
