Working from Mexico - anyone know a workaround for the international dial tone ?

Hello,

I am going to Mexico for a month this summer. I haven't told my boss as they want me in territory in case something comes up but I need 4 weeks in a different country.

My question is around the dial tone when someone tries calling my cellphone - how do I make it so the dial tone is the typical American one instead of the Mexican one? At first I thought calling over wi-fi would fix that but I believe the local Mexican networks will still register it, and switch to the different cadence/sound. Any tips?

I do have a local American number on Outreach - does anyone know if this will work from Mexico?

Thanks for any help!

i do not know how to solve your problem, but I LOVE the fact that you are going to just leave the country and not tell anyone hahah!!!

THAT is a boss move my friend.

Thanks @CuriousFox but I don't think I'll be much help here.

Your outreach number will still work just fine. But as far as getting rid of the Mexican dial tone I have no clue. I've never needed to do that before.

I say just play dumb. If they call you and mention how it sounded weird just reply with, "that's strange, weird how?" I doubt anyone will dig into it all that much unless they already had reasons to suspect you'd be going to Mexico.

Thanks - yea, they know I'm going for a week so this might be a bit fishy.

I'm considering turning my wifi calling/cellular data completely off on my phone. It'll just go straight to voicemail - no Mexico dial tone. Anyone that calls (my boss) will text me (will go to Messages on my computer) after and say hey, went to voicemail....Then I'll call them and say my phones acting up. This is worst case scenario. I actually have a new boss that has never called me - always just slacks me or starts a zoom.

Does this sound bulletproof-ish ?

Avoid lying at any cost, at the end of the day if you get caught, so long as you avoided any outright lies you can probably get by with a slight ass chewing.

Don't say your phone is acting up, just give em a call and say sorry I missed your call.

But yeah I think you'll be fine. I highly doubt they'll even care enough to notice anything is off. Unless you've ever given them a reason not to trust you.

I'm in Mexico, didn't tell my previous boss and never had any issues.

He only called me a couple of times directly so it wasn't a huge concern.

I got t mobile and here it sometimes gets the ATT network or a Mexican one.

I think if it stays on ATT it will sound the same as it does in the US but I am not 100% sure.

Maybe go to AT&T and ask if you get a line with them if it will sound the same in Mexico.

Do you live near the border? I'd go to the network providers and ask the Latino sales guys if they know.

Curious... is your wifi situation good? I've been going back and forth wanting to do this for a while but I'm concerned even if I bought a hot spot I'd have issues with wifi reliability

Your wifi will be like in the states. Depends on the company and the location. My dad is an attorney and has done quite a few zoom appearances in court using my wifi. Judge mentioned once that his connection was clearer than everyone else's

Mine is good, but it does depend on where you are.

Where in Mexico are you planning to travel? I can give you more tips based on that.

I would most likely work out of San Jose Del Cabo for a month!

When I have travelled internationally I find that "Calling from Wifi" feature (and turning off regular dialing) allows me to avoid int'l charges and other issues.

I was always curious about this. Glad to know it works! Any issues to know about if I'm looking to prospect while traveling internationally?

Damn, I'm glad I read this. I've considered working from Mexico and didn't even think about the fact that the dial tone is different.

Couldn’t you just VPN to the US and then use a US based IP to VOIP?

I’ve never had an issue in Mexico with people saying my dial tone was weird. I think you’re reading into it a bit too much

Get a plan with AT@T that includes an international data plan specific to Mexico. An easy add on.
