Working on the weekends

I have never had a job where I felt the need to work on the weekends... until now.

I have found myself waking up on Saturdays and opening my laptop to get some extra work done. Whether it is to catch up from the week before, get ready for the busy week ahead, or both. And to be honest I am conflicted about it. I don't love the feeling of needing to get work done on my days off.

I know there are some workaholics out there who have been working on the weekends for a while and are probably thinking "dude stfu and get your job done..." but would still love your thoughts here Savages!

Do you work on the weekends?

I don't.

Would I, if it made the difference between making a fat stack of cash or not making a fat stack of cash? I'm a dirty capitalist...of course I would.ย

But as a general rule and in the words of Project Pat...from 3 pm on Friday to 8 am on Monday:

DON'T CALL ME NO MO
AND DON'T TEXT ME NO MO
CUZ I'M DONE WITCHA

Exactly. I've also been told by some people in buying positions at my company that they plan their weeks out Sunday night and are much more likely to respond to emails on Sunday than Monday. Anecdotal but its something thats stuck with me.ย

If it's absolutely critical to a deal closing then I'll shoot off an email or two. Even then I won't spend too much time. I work hard on keeping a pretty strict line between work and personal life mostly for my sanity.

I used to but not any more because I started to realize that it's helping everyone except me. I might work extra hours for sometime on the weekdays but weekends.. not at allย

Had done it for many years, and now it's part of the filter, if they work on weekends, I simply stop the job process. Unless I am having to pay rent and haven't had income for some months or weeks, then yeah I'll work a weekend. Glad to say I haven't been there in more than 4 years now.

I have in previous roles and it has never paid off. It didn't make me more money, it didn't get me a promotion. All it did was burn me out and make me hate my job because I was putting in more hours, was constantly stressed and couldn't learn how to detach from work. Now I turn off my notifications and won't let myself look at email/slack on weekends and my work/life balance and quality of life has greatly improved.ย

I definitely think turning off email/slack over the weekend is a must. I just know if I see notifications come through I won't be able to help myself and work/life balance is so important! Whatever it is... it can wait until Monday.

Will only work if it is an emergency situation.ย  Outside of that I will send them a quick email response saying that this will get handled on Monday when I arrive back at the office.ย

I work in an industry that historically has short lead times and a deal can be won or lost based on a 48 hour response time, including over weekends.

With that said, I am still able to leave my work phone behind when going out for a few hours on the weekend and am not glued to it after 5 on Friday. It is all about finding the right balance and what is comfortable for you. Having a good time and clear boundaries is also very helpful.ย

I really try not to do it and have work and personal phones to try and avoid being contacted on the weekends. I try to hide from my work phone, but if the client reaches out on the weekend, I am getting back to them on the weekend.

I have not & will not work on the weekends. Like some of the other comments mentioned, if it made me more money then sure, but it doesn't. I feel like every company & their dog preaches about work life balance so I'm going to take advantage of that & leave my laptop untouched from Friday afternoon to Monday morningย

Iโ€™ll answer an email from a client that they send on the weekend, but thatโ€™s about it. No run up shit to get ready for the following week. Everybody we sell to takes off on the weekend, why shouldnโ€™t I? To apply the logic from the film Drive, From 8:30-5 Monday-Friday Iโ€™m yours, a minute either side of that and youโ€™re on your own.

Yes, I works on weekends but usually not because I HAVE to, but because I want to keep, maintain or increase my edge.
And yes I enjoy myself on the weekends and do fun stuff but keeping the early rise schedule on the weekends itโ€™s easy to put an hour or two into work while the rest of the world sleeps in.

Pretty against it. If I have to work weekends because of something that I effed up, that's one thing. But if it becomes a trend and the factors leading to weekend work are beyond my control, that's a big 'ol red flag for me.

You'll see it level out, but honestly working on the weekends is never a good habit to get into. The balance will come and you'll figure it out, but do that during the week. You'll totally burn out haaard if you work 6 or even 7 days. You'll get there, you got this!

When I first started this gig I worked non-stop... like taking discovery calls at 0500 on Saturday morning kind of non-stop. I wanted to maximize my time when we first launched... until my productivity took a nose dive. I don't work at all on the weekends anymore, aside from confirming calls or mental prep for Mondays. My production during the remaining 5 days of the week is higher than it was when I was working 7. Plus my laundry is done, and my house isn't trashed.

The ability to 'switch gears' from Work to Home on a Friday night/Saturday morning is a real life-hack. As a Sales Pro you are going to have to work all kinds of days and times to get the deals over the line but learning to switch gears each weekend wherever possible is a skill I wish I learned earlier in my life. P.S I'm still no good at it but working on it.

It's bad enough that many people work their butts off from Monday - Friday and put up with the steess of hitting dead lines, but the weekends are for you to be able to recharge from a hectic week. Quality of life = weekend off. You have to draw the line somewhere or it will eat you alive.
