Working On Your Birthday?!

Do you work on your birthday? Yes or no? (w/ justification if possible)

I just wished a co-worker a happy birthday and said that I hoped she didn't see the Slack til tomorrow...got an immediate response that she was in the HQ office. <whomp whomp> And didn't sound thrilled.

I ALWAYS take my birthday off...I think I deserve it. I mean, with all the work I did on the day of my birth and all. 😋 Now my birthday falls on July 3rd, so I many times get if off anyway due to the 4th of July holiday. But I'm curious to hear everyone's personal perspectives.

You mean you don’t have “PO socks” for good luck? Bdays come once a year but you can get some serious mileage on a lucky pair of socks.

No doubt especially if it is the elusive whale we all want, why the hell not right?!?!?!?! One time was enough for me to keep trying it.

100% birthdays are the best to work. Also how does @MMMGood's birthday now fall on July 3rd? Wouldn't it always fall on the same day?

Personally, yes I do- I don't really care about birthdays, it's always seemed like an odd celebration after you turn 21. But that's just me- I don't like being gifted shit, sung too or called out because I rode the planet around the sun a few times.

But if you like birthdays- more power to you, there's no right or wrong!

That said, I will treat myself to days off whenever the f*0k I want, to do whatever activity pleases me. Just not in the name of birth!

I agree...I don't like the attention, either. For me, it's an opportunity to reflect on the last year and the new one beginning. Reevaluating goals, etc. Kinda like an annual reset button.

I felt the same way for a long time as a young man. I would typically work on my birthdays but there wasn't a culture of celebrating it in the last days of the tobacco biz. eventually co-workers realized it and starting saying happy birthday.

then i got into tech sales gigs, and the companies often celebrated them. two  cos. gave us a pto day to use that day or another. big red doesn't really give af.

I will say my perspective changed as I aged. Not in celebrating mine, it's fun and all, but really celebrating other people. We have huge gatherings when people get married, or sadly when they die, but so often we forget to celebrate people that are still here....and we don't get to decide when they won't be.

After aging, turning 40 this year, and losing many friends to cancer or extreme sports accidents, I now celebrate birthdays. It is in honor of those that aren't able to.  I still work on my birthday, but find time to celebrate when its most convenient.

Honestly find it weird that we praise people for working on their Birthday! It is just another day unless it is your 21st but past that there isn't really anything special about the day.

My old company used to give us 8 hours PTO for our birthday which was really nice, but most people just added it to the accrual.

Personally, if it's in the middle of the week, I'll just work through it, maybe go to a nice dinner that night and celebrate on the weekend. If it's a Monday or Friday, I'll probably take it off and do something fun, but I don't like having gaps in the middle of the workweek. That's just me!

You've definitely got a nice birthday to parlay into the holiday! I would for sure take that off every year.

giving someone an extra day off has never hurt a company before. its why we also give a full week off between Christmas and New Years. i think its important, especially in sales. the grind will wear down on you so you need to take time off and take care of yourself so you can be a high performer.

We do Dec-Nov, but I think that your April-March schedule would work the best. take a lot of pressure off during the holidays and allows people to relax and spend time with families. too often I've worked during the holidays just to not take any chances and make sure i hit quota

One month in 2013 I had 4 birthdays...

Kidding, but yes I've had it work for sure. Depends on the buyer, etc. but it's a good technique much like the "I'm going on vacation tomorrow!" play
