Working remotely, what the future holds for sales?

I have been working remotely the past year, travelling across a few countries. It didnt impact my numbers in a bad way, in fact I had my best year yet.

  1. What are your thoughts on sales working remotely for good, even across borders?
  2. Is the new way of selling mainly online whilst you're sitting on some remote island sipping on coconuts?
  3. Could that freedom/wellbeing actually help you perform better?
  4. Do you prefer being in the office or face to face with prospects and clients?

Looking forward to reading your thoughts.

I was fully remote pre-pandemic. I think we are kidding ourselves that everything will go back as it were before without implementing major changes.

As sales reps it's easier to be a road warrior, calling on prospects - some planned, some on the fly - while having the freedom of working wherever your laptop is at that moment.ย

My sales team was partially remote. Couple people full-time remote, some splitting it up, and some coming in every day (usually BDRs). AEs all had been traveling some so working on the road was pretty standard.ย

I fully expect to go back to something similar as before, just probably with a higher percentage of people splitting time up between the office and home. I do expect less in-person meetings, at least earlier on now that people are more comfortable with important discussions via video call rather that "sitting across the table and looking them in the eye".

I've tossed this around a good bit. I was one of our first truly remote employees hired (mid 2020, go figure).ย Territory dev in carolinas.ย

1. No forseeable change in asking me to ever relocate BACK to headquarters. Having boots on the ground, getting face time with potential partners is a huge plus in leaderships eyes.ย

I'm always a facetime/zoom/teams call away for connection. I think if you make stimulating conversation, you can totally have that personal "team building" feel.ย

2. That may be a stretch in my mind...I personally love my office, the vibe and the focus I get from it. I live 15 minutes from the beach and I don't work from the beach.ย

3. Our company 100% puts our employees health above all. Encourages us to take time off when kids are born, sick family members, etc.ย

4. Mix of both. I think you run into trouble when you do the SAME THING over and over and over.ย

Some companies are a bit old school and definitely like the idea of having their reps under one roof and "collaborating". I personally would prefer a hybrid or fully remote role- Personally, I certainly don't think commuting and dealing with public transportation is going to be an easy adjustment to get back into.ย

Since pandemic pushing everyone to wfh, many people are of the opinion that all aspects of businesses (at least for software) can be done remotely. How many of you still believe that persona touch goes a long way to close a sales deal?
