Worst advice given by a manager

There are great sales managers and there are bad. This thread is about the bad. I simply want to hear about a time where your manager really effed up.

One that comes to mind for me would probably be when I received a shitty unsolicited RFP from a prospect in the size of 15,000 employees. No access to decision makers and poor product fit. Simply waste of time.

So I go to the sales manager and say that we should decline this RFP as we're refused access to the right people and it doesn't look like a great fit for us. Again, waste of time.

The sales manager freaks out and says that we need to complete every RFP! He then calls the CRO to create an internal task force who ends up spending weeks on completing this RFP. As we go along the team members assigned from the different departments highlight that this is a really bad fit and shouldn't have been done in the first place. But the manager and CRO still pushes it through.

After completing it and sending through the client comes back and says they won't be moving forward due to us not meeting their criteria.

My manager then tells me to get back to them and offer the product with an 80% discount and says that they MUST buy for a price like that (wow). I refused and quit my job 2 weeks later as I couldn't work for a guy like that.

I know one day in the future that an RFP will cause my mental breakdown and/or death.

I simply decline them. If the prospects starts chasing you youโ€™ll know that you can use the RFP as hostage to get access to people you want. If they donโ€™t chase you it would have been a waste of time anyways. Otherwise just reply to RFPs that you were involved in creating.

"I'm concerned about you not making more calls"

When I had already hit quota for the month, had NEVER missed quota during my six months there, and was seeing WAY more success off video email prospecting.

Was working a renewal opportunity at the time for about $70k with a large retailer. CIO went dark for 3 weeks before the renewal after saying he was still considering the renewal. 4 days before month end, I was told I have to send the CFO the DocuSign by my manager. Keep in my mind, one of the painpoints the CIO had was his relationship with their CFO. I said this was not a good idea and will harm the relationship. I was told to send it anyways.

Well, I get an email from the CIO saying the CFO went into his office screaming why a sales rep he's never heard of was sending him DocuSigns for a service he's never heard of. Needless to say, the CIO informed us that we have been blacklisted by the company and he even removed our connection on LinkedIn (I found this part funny). I was then told to prospect into the CEO from the same manager to get traction with them. Sometimes you just have to go with your gut and know when a dead horse is dead.
