Worst / Best / Weird moments with clients

It's no secret that magic happens when meeting with a client...

The most fml moment I've experienced was back in Q2 2020 when my client was practicing his divorce speech in front of the mirror open mic with my whole team listening.

Your turn.

Had a client use the bathroom while on a Zoom call and not wash his hands. Heard the emptying and flushing and couldn't hide my face when I didn't hear the hand washing. Needless to say, that deal went nowhere besides here to state my horrific story.

😂 Yeah, pre-COVID days when everyone wasn’t diligently checking if they were muted or not. Best part about it was it recorded, needless to say that basically got brought up at any company function or meeting for quite some time.

Same story except they thought they were muted and came back to make a huge deal about it. They definitely made it worse.

I like when I fart loud enough that zoom reminds me I’m on mute thinking I had something to say

A client got wasted at dinner, tripped on the way out of the hotel lobby/restaurant, and split open their chin on the sidewalk outside. Despite the waterfall of blood, they still wanted to go out to a few bars. I took that as my cue to go back to my own hotel and call it a night.

One of my favorites is my old BDR at a past company scheduled me a demo and swore it was for a large opportunity client, a university actually: 6 figure budget and he claims to have vetted them and made sure they met all our requirements for a demo and swore he was the decision maker.

So I get to the demo later that week and the contact signs on. I quickly discovered that no, it's not a university... its a university STUDENT.... it was his capstone project. LMAO

That BDR wasn't the brightest tool in the shed and didn't last much longer due to other issues related to his performance.
He also bought a monkey right when the pandemic was starting. He made some interesting choices.

Had dinner with a prospect who was visiting town for an event. IT exec for a mid-size city. Pleasant, middle-aged guy. Spent most of the evening making small talk about our career paths and families. As we were leaving the restaurant he asks me if I know where he could find some "young girls".

We had a client using our product in combination with a partner's product. Our company had some bad blood with the partner company and the partner. That client took a meeting with us together while we did not know if we would be partners the week after. During the meeting, our partner started pitching our competiton.

Absolute unfiltered racist (Chinese & Indian were the targets) was my channel contact in Australia for a Med Dev deal, having to smile and nod through his shit (especially during the beginning of COVID) was brutal.

Oh man, I sell to homeowners so I’m with people in “their space” and all sorts of stuff has happened. Best is actually I was outside looking around when some police roll up next door and start looking around. They knock, identity themselves, but no one comes to the door. They didn’t force entry but they started looking in the windows etc…then as they went in back a guy opened the window on the second story, drops out, looks at me, and runs. A couple minutes later a cop comes around and asks me if I’ve seen anyone…I’m no snitch so I just shook my head no and went about my business

Worst and weirdest was agreeing with an anti-vaxxer to get a deal closed.  Not my proudest moment but the biggest deal of the month!

I had arranged a lavish helicopter experience for myself, gorgeous SDR who I was supposed to be "mentoring", and EB at F500 company.

As we're approaching the pilot's desk to get ready for this flight, my SDR was tugging at my side saying "Legacy, LEGACY, we're gonna have a problem!"

Pilot "Sir we have a strict weight limit for these helicopters"
Me: "Great!" (SDR and I are skinny)

In walks my client who is morbidly obese with his spouse who has a similar stature.

I ended up paying an extra 10k to get a twin engine helicopter for a POC that didn't go anywhere.

Lunch meeting ends - we shake hands...

Customer: Can I hug you?
Me: OK..?
Customer: Holds me in a tight hug for like 30-45 seconds.
Me thinking: I'm never going to dinner with this man.

Had a client pick his nose for a very long time and then blame it on hayfever. I was chill.

We had a meeting two weeks later and he did it again.

I ignored it, still odd.

Once in zoom, A real estate agent I was pitching stood up to grab something from their nearby counter…. The client was wearing no bottoms. Then she just kept moving right along assuming I didn’t notice. So that’s how I played it too.

Called in to a customer and Lindsay picked up. I said, "Hi Lindsday...is Larry available." (Larry was my contact.) Lindsay says, "Sorry, Larry isn't 'with us anymore'". I immediately fear the worst and am thinking the guy died, so I say "I'm terribly sorry to hear that, what happened?" Lindsay then whispers over the phone...."I used to be Larry."

This text conversation from yesterday with a client is top of mind:

Me: "Hey! Is there any chance you'd let me share your contact info and be a reference for [my company]/[product]?"
Client: Sure
Client: I also have some shirtless pics if you'd like them
Client: Smile emoji

Was going to post the screenshot, but I either don't know how or that's just not an option.

It's always funny when points of contact are openly talking about wanting to quit. I've had some ask if my company is hiring.

A client (female) logged in with the camara on right before he put her shirt on, she realized this 2 or 3 minutes later and just left.

she had been very interested in the product up till that point but we never heard of her again.

Once I visited one facility (water treatment) and my POC was missing one arm - unfortunately was the right hand and I was SOOO excited to meet him that I forgot that tiny detail. Then I offered my right hand super hyped ready to shake his prosthetic arm - sh*t!

I once pre-contacted an owner 5 minutes before meeting with his ops manager on-site. He answered his cellphone and I told him I would like to introduce myself while there. He lost it, called me every name in the book and said he is sick of sales people going to insane efforts to sell deals and get ahead. He then told me to let the front desk know as soon I got there so he could “bring me a soda, or whatever the hell I want”.
After arriving, I knew he was hot so didn’t mention anything to the front desk, but went in immediately to meet with ops a manger and said “John may stop by to say a quick hello”… and before I could even finish the sentence the owner busted in the door of the conference room and started laying into me. He was sweating, spitting while he yelled and the ops guy was terrified and had no idea what had happened.
I just stood there and let the him go on. Then when he was finished I introduced myself and said “you have a rather large sales team here don’t you?”. The owner said, “yes, why?” and I told him they should be Pre-calling the owners of the companies their are trying to win contracts for, and if they aren’t, he is losing business.
He stood there thinking for a second, I had my bag in hand ready to be kicked out, while the ops manager sat there frozen.
A few seconds later, the owner reached out to shake my hand and said “you’re right, great job” and walked out. Sold them 2 weeks later… but still remains the most awkward moment in the books.
