Would u stop after hitting a possum with your car?

The other day my buddy hit a possum w his car It came up last second, it wasnt worth it to swerve and possibly hurt those in the car. If it was a larger animal or someones pet I would obviously have stopped, but my friends and I were arguing whether to turn around check and see how it was doing or to just keep driving. Thoughts? What would you do?

Do you keep driving or do you stop and check it out?

Once I hit a puppy on my way to an impromptu meeting with a client that was threatening to leave over someone else's stupid mistake. Small town in the mountains- curvy roads with no shoulder, so I had no where to go when the puppy ran out in front of me. Tore up the front of my car, there were pieces of my front end all over the road. I pulled into a driveway and bawled. A truck with a man and 3 young kids pulls up, picks up puppy's body and puts it in the back of the truck and drive away.

I went to the meeting with bloodshot eyes and mascara all over my face and had to have them call a tow truck for me. They not only didn't leave but by the end of the meeting they spent another $10k with me... rollercoaster of a day!

Holy shit that's terrible! It sounds like there was nothing you could do though, and you were smart not to swerve and put yourself in danger.

A rollercoaster of a day is right!

Looking back it was certainly one of my worst days in sales. My company didn't even give me a loaner car and I was an outbound rep, so I just had to have my husband take me to work every day until my car was done. I have so many instagram pictures from that time of me messing around in an empty office all day. hahaha

This could be a good interview question...once with a possum another with a kitten just to f around and see your candidates values...

Like if im 50/50 about a candidate ill throw in this question. And start with the possum who according to the above stat will most likely say s/he will keep moving. Then ill ask what they will do if it was a puppy or a kitten? If they maintain the same answer I got no problem ill just ask why they wouldn't stop?
If they change their stance i would be why did you do that? Because i will feel that he doesn't value life equally.

Yeah, except no Opossum is a persons pet, so no one will expect you to pay the vet bill. A responsible person would stop for a pet.

Then comes the question if the dog isn't anyones pet would you stop? Just because you feel responsible for another person or responsible for the life you took?

I always feel responsible for the life, it's whether or not there is a physical or monetary responsibility that needs to be taken.

What are you going to do when you stop for the opossum? Move the body? It's small enough it won't cause damage to a car, it's large enough it can be seen by motorcyclists- it's more dangerous for you to be on the road intervening. However with a pet there is both a moral and societal obligation, as well as keeping other motorists safe from a large potentially destructive object in the road.

Considering that I have empathy, yes I absolutely would stop. And if it wasn’t dead, I’d make sure it would be shortly so it could no longer suffer.

What difference does the type of animal make?

Right? Damn. Unless it was super dangerous to pull over I'd stop for any creature except bugs.

@MrsTechSales what a story. I think I laughed and cried all within the 30 seconds it took me to read that.

Secondly, I live in the mountains and hit small rodents on the road more often than I would like, never have even considered stopping.

In England it's more so fox's. If you hit a fox and you know it's a fox you carry on as stopping or swerving can be more dangerous.

Equally, we've been taught if any animal (unless it will smash your car up) is in the way, and you hit it, it's okay. Might be an odd thing we have here it just means less danger to other drivers.

When the driver of a vehicle runs over a person, he usually stops, gets out and in some way tries to help him or call the authorities to report the case and ask for assistance. But why is it that when the accident is with an animal, the same thing does not happen, but is almost always left to its own devices, whether it is dead or injured? Perhaps because of the lack of knowledge about what should be done, but surely due to a lack of culture and respect, because in the vast majority of these types of cases, drivers seem to care more about the damage that their vehicle could have and not about help that they should lend to the animal that, "accidentally" or for whatever reason, they run over.
