Would You Apply if There Were 1000s of Applicants?

Would you apply if there were thousands of applicants going for the same role? I guess there could be looking for more than 1 person but still thousands!!

Im kinda tried going through the interview process, been through sooo many.

Its always 4-5 rounds with activities at some companies aka homework assignments.

I dont want thousands of competition, would feel like a waste of time going for it.

Maybe its a bad mindset but man Im am fucking tired of going through interviews lol.

Thoughts?

Yes because Iโ€™m better than the other 999.ย

You got this fam, keep your head up and keep trucking! Maybe try leveraging the new jobs feature here?

Try and get creative. Back chanel the hiring manager, use your connections, etc.

Silver lining - you are now probably one of the most experienced interviewers in your networkโ€ฆ you never know when that is what will make the difference between an average role and your dream role.ย

Yes, but show youโ€™re a prospecting beast by finding someone already within that organization and make fast friends.ย

Best way to bypass the process entirely.ย

Make friends first. You wonโ€™t need to apply, they will invite you. At the very least it will give you an inside recommendation to get your name to the top of the list.

100% cause my mentality is I'm better than the others applying. Interviews are definitely a lot, however keep going and give them every reason to make it an easy choice to hire you.

Oh really so you ask people you know or they come to you or both?

I been trying to do some social selling on linkenIn so I get the sales managers attention and that way when something comes out, they would reach out to me or know of me when I reach them.ย

Both. I will, flat out, not go work somewhere unless that place has somebody I personally know and whose word I trust.

Yes, absolutely! But I would be creative with my application. I'd reach out to decision-makers (LinkedIn, cold call/email, video, etc.). If it's a role you really want, go for it no matter what! Interviews suck, but that's, unfortunately, the game.ย

I got a new job recently by being creative; I sent a Vidyard of me to the Director of Sales, got on a phone call with him, and then went through a few interviews. I probably would not have gotten any interview if it wasn't because I reached out to the Director.

Definitely! Think about it from a jobs to be done perspective: youโ€™ll ALWAYS be up against other salespeople even if you donโ€™t have direct competitors, so worst case scenario this is good practice for your career.

Never again and here's why: One time I auditioned for Big Brother.ย  We had to submit a 3 minute video audition tape and then go to an in person event at the location nearest you.ย  My location was a mall in Cincinnati and there were 5,000 people in line.ย  I happened to be contacted prior to the event that I was getting a VIP pass to the front of the line due to interest in my tape.ย  I got to the line and told them the code phrase I was supposed to use to check in.ย  They had someone pop out of the line that previously looked like another applicant.ย  She ushered me to the front of the line and instructed me not to mention how I got there.ย  They send in 5 of us at a time in front of the casting director.ย  The other 4 were ridiculously loud and boisterious with their hands, jumping around, screaming at each other and the only way to get in a word was to scream over top of them.ย  That's not me and I'll never put myself in a position to have to change who I am to stand out that doesn't represent myself to be noticed from a herd of people.ย ย

@Thesamiamย Apply because it's part of the process but what you do is you get in touch with the hiring managers and if you need to, do some groundswell by asking other people in those positions you're applying for if you can have 10-minutes to learn about the role.ย

With the hiring managers, find them on LinkedIn, write a damn good email that touches on the company's goals, their department. Ex. you might be going after a spot on the Financial Services sales team and I bet you'll find some content off of their marketing content (many organizations do a report showing changes in that industry) which you can leverage in that email and humbly ask for a virtual coffee/intro.

With the groundswell: They were just like you so be up front and send a message asking for their time, offer to send a starbucks gift card for the sake of a virtual coffee, and be honest with the fact that you're looking to get the job and you want to learn from someone who has done the job well. Most people are pretty easy going and everyone can empathize that they've been in your spot as a job seeker. Another thing to leverage is the employee referral programs, so you can ask at the end if they are willing to send you a link for the referral for the role (every company pays at least $500 for internal referrals, most people would love to make easy money without having to do anything)

Do this approach with all companies but it's crucial to do this especially with the high applicant volume roles on LinkedIn and Indeed.

Hope this helps

Great post thank you!! I do usually reach out to manager and create a intro video for them.ย

I will need to start conversations with other AEs in the role and if they take the offer on just chatting with me, ill surprise them with a simple star bucks card.ย

I did forget about referrals and Ill start asking for those links to help them out as well.

Obviously depends on job, but if thereโ€™s a lot of applicants Iโ€™d try to message as many people as you could within that company a few days before applying. 70% of those applicants probably wonโ€™t do that, and youโ€™ll increase the chance that your name actually gets noticed in that pile of resumes.
