Sales roles can involve a focus on achieving specific performance targets or quotas, but it is generally not accurate to say that sales is solely a performance-based job. Salespeople often have many other responsibilities in addition to meeting quotas, such as identifying and contacting potential customers, giving presentations, answering questions, negotiating prices and terms of sales, and maintaining accurate records of sales activities and customer interactions. In general, sales roles involve a combination of performance-based elements, such as achieving quotas, and other responsibilities that require a range of skills and abilities, including strong communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to build relationships with customers, and the ability to adapt to changing situations and customer needs.Ultimately, the specific responsibilities and focus of a sales role will depend on the company and industry in which the salesperson is working, as well as the needs and goals of the organization.

I just started a full closing role for the first time, and I now consider sales to be 1/3 Bugging internal people to talk to me 1/3 bugging external people to talk to me and 1/3 pipeline hand wavy magic

Are you asking, "Do you think all that matters in sales is closing business?" if that is the question then yes it matters however it varies from org to org. Many hate the idea of it only being about a number and thats it. some will only care about numbers. Most will outwardly admit this as well.

No! Especially at a start-up when you do a lot of extra (write every email template, organize CRM, spreadsheets, brainstorm, etc.)
