I never thought I would want to manage people- sounded messy and annoying tbh

But now that I have I can't imagine going back to being an IC

What are your thoughts?

Be in an IC role or a Leadership role?

No marketing, mayo isn't an MQL
Depends on the individual, as you noted management is about taking that step back and helping others succeed.

If that ain't for you, there's nothing wrong with that. Sounds like you're getting something out of it if you don't want to shift back.

Personally for now I'm focusing on IC, but who knows. 🤷‍♂️

Would also recommend checking out this recent thread that has related comments.

I prefer coaching, building and challenging folks.

I’ve been an IC multiple times (including now) and I’m over it. Always love being in the room to close when needed, but working for my team is what I enjoy most.

I feel you there. I get burnt out in IC roles way faster than in MGMT roles

I'm looking forward for down the road when I can move into management. I do enjoy helping others win and improve, but I'm not yet at the point where I feel ready to make the jump.

I enjoy being an IC because I crush it but Management is interesting as you get to spend more time on other sides of the business. I'm in a startup now so I'm splitting my time between IC/MGT which is painful at times.

Yeah I have been there too. Either way, one or the other is definitely better than both. Having to split time can really suck

I personally look at a career progression and what I’m trying to get out of it. IC roles typically have a greater ability to directly affect their take home on any given day which is great for building up that war chest. Down the road I imagine I’ll personally be looking for something that allows me to focus on a little bit more stability. To each their own.

I completely agree, IC tends to have greater opportunity to earn but less stability.

I currently hold a Leadership role...with no ICs reporting to me. Ideal :)

Interesting... no direct reports at all?

Just 1 actually but I consider him more of a partner than a direct report. He runs as many projects as I do.

So how would that be considered a leadership role, if you aren't.... leading anyone?

Easy answer: leading doesn't mean managing :)
