Would you respond to a hiring manager that has no job to offer you now ?

As a Sales Manager part of my job is to build and maintain a network of potential candidates for AE roles in my team so that when I have an opening (someone gets promoted, someone leaves, we create a new role) I can hire the best people in the market vs the best people on the market.

I therefore spend a lot of time on LinkedIn looking for talent and when I find people that I feel would be a good match I'm reaching out even when I don't have a job to offer so that we can spend 30 minutes to get to know each other and figure out if we want to reconnect if/when an opportunity arises.

Would you respond positively to such an outreach ?

As an AE it never happened to me but I figure I would have appreciated the outreach but not responded positively if I wasn't thinking about moving at all.

Networking is always useful, but you also need to guard your time. Has to be enticing enough to get one's attention.

Out of respect for everyoneโ€™s time I would hope both parties are upfront with their expectations. Beyond that networking is always good.

As long as your outreach is compelling I think most people would react positively. Also, make sure youโ€™re upfront early on about the situation and that you donโ€™t have an opening right now but are looking to build a network.

Also, be prepared to meet someone who is amazing and you donโ€™t want to lose that opportunity to hire. Now, you have to figure out what to do, i.e. how can you hire them before losing the opportunity.

Great subject and I assume you know what youโ€™re doing, qualifying talent, I have a question at what age do management think is to old for sales?

I donโ€™t think thereโ€™s an age limit, in my role I mostly look at experience and since I cover sort of a lower Enterprise segment itโ€™s usually seen as a stepping stone between inside sales and named/strategic account roles and fits well with AEs that have ยซย onlyย ยป 3-5 years selling experience so itโ€™s pretty rare (although it happens) that I run into people that over 40 years old

I would respond positively if your out reach did totally SUCK like most recruiters do hahaha.

but you could also just interact with their posts, and stuff and keep a list. then when role opens up you have ppl to go to first

Fair point, all my messages are tailored so that the person knows that Iโ€™ve looked at their profile and why I liked it

Which takes a lot of time and since Iโ€™m get a pretty low response rate I wonder if I should carry on or simply repurpose that time

i bet it does. but i would also expect a low response rate since you want to talk about something that doesnt exist haha. not everyone will see value in that.

Would you respond to a demo request with zero discovery? Maybe an RFP out of the blue?

if your outreach is solid, you are not a jerk, and you are straight up about your intentions from the get go, people would probably talk to you.
