Would you sign an employment contract?

all these lay offs have me thinking about the pros and cons of signing a contract with an employer.

Pros:

  • you cant get laid off, and if they do get rid of you, they ether need to pay out your contract (massive severance) or your employer would need to present a "trade" to a new company.
  • There is more incentive for the company to invest in you since they have you for a specific amount of time.
  • You have incentive to keep your head down and not focus on other opportunities
  • It could help you play more of a long game. instead of only focusing on decisions that effect the next 12 months

Cons:

  • it limits your ability to take advantage of other opportunities that come up
  • If massive change happens you just gotta stick it out
  • Companies could fuck with comp since they know you cant leave.

SO THE QUESTION IS:

what is the longest contract you would sign with your current company at your current comp?

EDIT: what unique stipulation would you make sure you put into your contact?

2 years at a time. anything more than that, I am limiting my freedom. I think that even 2 years is a lot in today's world

2 years seems like a solid amount.

I can stick my ass up to 1.5-2years with the commitment. Not sure how to handle if the company turns out to be shit.

IF I was ever to do a contract, 2 years.

But I'm in an at-will state, and just an IC. So it's unlikely. :)

A contract is more enforceable than your plan numbers, and it lays everything out. I always ask to go that route

- There would have to be an agreement that commissions would only be changed on mutually agreeable terms almost like union shops work.

- The agreement would have to have a 2-way out after 18 months where either the company or employee could break for a defined set of reasons.

- Other than that the pros would outweigh the cons

It's a lock-in where you can't find other opportunities for yourself, but they can definitely buy you out.
A massive severance or a normal severance; does it really matter - how massive can the sevvy be.
1 year at a time. Yearly contracts are still fine I guess - but nothing more than that.

It would depend on what the contract says.
