Would you take a BDR manager role?

My BDR's manager left the company and my BDR has been offered the manager role. He says he doesn't want to take it, as he'd prefer to bide his time and move into an inside sales/account management type role next.

Looking for the War Room's opinion - if he takes the manager role is he stuck in a sales support role for the rest of his life?

Is taking a BDR manager role vs inside sales a career killer?

Life Tip #1: Know yourself.

Sounds like your rep knows they don't want to be the BDR Manager, and management is not for everyone. They should stay the course as an IC, and allow the company to find a proper manager rather than promoting a good BDR into a seat they may fail horribly at.

If he wants to remain an IC he should absolutely decline the offer...being a manager would just make him miserable in several different ways. Takes a certain kind of person to manage well, and it shouldn't be someone who says "yeah I guess I can try it..."

Completely agree and I would add that managing can sometimes be a very negative experience for folks who aren't ready for it.

I hated being a BDR manager. And it's difficult to move past that role if you don't have any closing experience

That's his biggest concern

I think his concern is pretty valid. It limits you long term, especially your compensation

While I don't think it's a career killer per se, I think he would hurt himself taking a role he doesn't want.

NO...I don't want a manager position in general. I would rather just worry about myself lol.

I wouldn't do it! It can be a dead end. Unless the end goal is to be a BD Manager, I would recommend working your way up to be an AE, get full closing experience and then you have a lot more options to move into other IC roles or manager roles

You really need to want to be a manager to find it fulfilling job, and if he is focused on moving up into a true selling position than this is a round about way to do it.

If his goal isn't management then the only reason to take the job would be if there are explicit reasons why it will help him get to his goal of a sales position. There likely aren't so in that case he should consider it a great vote of confidence that he was approached about it, but politely decline and take that as an opportunity to tell the bosses what his career goals are.
