Would you want to work for a SaaS or SAS?

I didnt know what SAS was until a few days ago when I applied for a SAS company.

In case you're a noob like I am..

SaaS (Software as a Service) - is the company's own product that offers its service to the client

SAS (Software as Service) - works with multiple different vendors and offering those different products to the client

I feel that SaaS is the way to go since they own their own product vs SAS doesn't own anything.

So are SAS companies pretty much a reseller of software basically??

SaaS, I don't see the value in being a middle man.

I wonder if being a middle man the clients would get better pricing than if they were to go to the actual vendor???

No. Middle men add an extra layer of cost. The cost is passed onto the client.

There is also a huge company in Germany literally named SAS.

Nope, that's SAP. SAS is based in Cary, North Carolina.

Good point, I wasn't mixed up with SAP. Just used to drive past a very large SAS office/complex and falsely assumed they were German too.

I'm all about selling at the Vendor level, so my vote is for SaaS!

Margins are low but volumes are higher for any VAR (of which SAS would be classified).

Depends on what your preferred way of operating is.

I have always preferred being at the vendor level because usually margins, and therefore commissions, are higher.

One exception might be management consulting, but that's not part of the question you're asking.

Oh don't all SAS companies consult? In that case, the SAS company I am going for is all about consultation.

Yes I think they do all consult. But they exist in the VAR space typically in my experience. So they have consulting services dedicated to particular products or use-cases.

Whereas management consulting is more open ended and usually is agnostic of products.

SAS, the global behemoth, is a great company. There are not "SAS companies" but there might be VARs that resell their services. SaaS covers such a broad spectrum of companies from Gong to Salesforce to Shopify and beyond.

SaaS is the way to go but remember they move fast and break things in the process and unless your working for a bootstrapped company one day your it the next your not it and looking for a new gig as most SaaS companies are investor backed and want instant coffee(Sales) from day one even if they have never sold into a region or market.

A future business partner and I plan on going the SAS route. Take our collective knowledge of sales operational excellence, build preferred reseller pricing, and get to working preventing bozos from fucking up anymore Salesforce instances because they’re just the smartest guys at the company.
