You are offered a role to make 400k(guaranteed) but theres a catch

Alright WR here's a situation that I can neither confirm nor deny happened to me.

Company has AE openings and is looking for a more experienced seller. Current org is ~50 people and the sales team average age is 24.

Their team makes between 400-1mil/year and they have the w-2s to prove it.

The catch is they require you to work from 8 am -8 pm Sunday through Friday in office.

Suppose you get offered the job, do you accept or decline? Why?

As someone with a team in APAC, you'd maybe have some meetings Sunday night, and the work week ends Thursday evening for NAMER.

If it was 400k guaranteed, yes for only a year. It would be an hourly rate of 111/hr, as its 72 hours a week.
would not be a long term role by any means, most likely do it for a year, then do a 2 month vacation after.

Decline.

My daughter is only awake 7-7. An hour a day with her is total bullshit. And losing a weekend day that I canโ€™t spend having hobbies or hanging out with my friends and family is a raw deal.

If I was single, and had no kids, yeah I'd probably go crush it for a year or two. Making that kind of money early in your career, and then investing it, can give you a ton of flexibility later in life.
But I'm not, and have kids. No chance I'm disappearing on them for another 100-150k/year.

Itโ€™s a nice offer and if you have no other obligations at the moment, why not? You could work for a couple of years, bank the $$ and experience, and shift to another company later on.

The trick, of course, is to not blow up your lifestyle for those few years, but then - the long hours kind of takes care of that.

Exactly. If you're a single 25 year old, it could set you up nicely in the short term.

Definitely pass, how can you enjoy the money when you're chained to the job, literally. There's other opportunities out there to make the same while also not killing yourself.
can't take it with you when you're dead.....

1.) never see my kids.
2.) the vp of sales was a pompous SOB that would likely butt heads with me 24/7

Unless wfh, pass. Why would I spend 43% of the 168 hours in a week inside an office? Tack on a commute and your life has no value. You may as well just setup a compound in Gitmo at that rate.

Very much depends on personal circumstances but I'd caution the appeal of doing so just to make bank in the short-term and then plan to downshift in a year or 2...unless you are super [financially] disciplined...it can be easy to get comfortable with significantly increased earnings....amazing how you find a way to normalize spending more......and then after 1-2 years, you've had a great time with no money worries, spent pretty freely but really have no put enough away to offset the loss of quality of life during that time or to cushion you once you feel burnt out and want/need to step back.
But if single with no responsibilities and can maintain a similar / marginally higher cost lifestyle, then hell yeah (assuming it's selling something of interest and culture is bearable) ...being able to build up a sizable cushion over a short period of time can open up so many future wealth building opportunities (investments etc) that otherwise might not be accessible to you.

If this company is in CA , every startup company who made their inside sales employees work like this and didnโ€™t pay overtime got sued eventually and employees were paid out huge. Salesforce , LinkedIn, Oracle.. just to name a few were sued years ago because of thisโ€ฆ $400k isnโ€™t enough money to work that amount of hours, no chance Iโ€™d take that lifestyle. $1M is impressive but thereโ€™s always an outlier at every company.

Fuck it. Take the job and donโ€™t be a ๐Ÿˆ . Stack cheddar and quit if it sucks. ๐Ÿ˜†

I'd weigh up over commitments such as partner or kids or general social life. If you don't have over commitments I would 100% do it for a bit to earn top money. If you truly hate it after at least you can go on a long holiday to destress with all that mulla.

At 24... I'd do it. Over 30... I'm out. 12 hour days 6 days a week is easy work for that kind of money at 24. Save for a house, build retirement, still have time to golf on Saturday...

Is it inside sales? Does that include overtime? If not, itโ€™s worth more than $400k. And if it is inside sales, and they arenโ€™t paying overtime, go work there for 2 weeks and it could be worth a hole lot more.

Yes inside sales. to my understanding outside of California, the overtime laws favor the employer. I declined the offer. Love what you put out on Linkedin by the way

There's a reason the average age of the sales team is 24. Anyone with kids can't do 12 hour days, 6 days per week, IN OFFICE no less.
Maybe grind it out for two years, keep your current lifestyle, bank $500-$600k, and then move on to a more balanced role. But even that would be hard to do for 2 years.
