This is a fantastic opportunity imo. When I'm building a new team, I look at things from the perspective of three key variables:

1. People - What sort of people would i want in my team. Its easier to build a team from scratch because the new joiners are a part of building the culture. Kinda like the IKEA effect. So they'd be more vested to the cause provided you set the culture for that.ย

2. Process - Since you worked at the ground level, you'd know a lot of processes that worked, and processes that could have been eliminated or tweaked to achieve better results. Put that into place at the start. Its better to get it right in the first attempt.ย

3. Technology - Choose the right tech stack. When you're going to war, its better to have the right sort of equipment that would help you shift the odds in your favour.ย

If Iโ€™m reading this correctly and heโ€™s starting a new territory, number 3 may be out of his control and handled at a procurement level. The first two are great.ย

For number 1 know what profile you want to join, donโ€™t try and massage people who arenโ€™t a fit into that profile.ย

Only do it if you're sick of selling and would rather take on a coach role/mentality

Currently doing this- I went from having no team to a team of 7. Lots of pros and cons. Pros- you get to handpick every person that you bring on. Cons- unless you've built a team before, this can bite you in the ass. Hiring is definitely the hardest part, but watching your team succeed is super rewarding.ย

Another thing to consider- you will likely make less money at first. Since your entire team will be new, it will take them a while to ramp. You really have to be in it for the long haul.ย

Talk to as many seasoned sales leaders to get an understanding of whatโ€™s worked/ not worked for them and pick the styles that fit best for yourself, your new hires, and your company. Iโ€™m also extremely transparent with new hires, which builds trust. When hiring, I look for personality and drive vs experience. Obviously, experience is important but itโ€™s not everything for me. I choose people with different backgrounds and skill sets (example: one AE from zoominfo, one from sfdc, one from Marketo) and they are the โ€œexpertโ€ on the team based on their experience. Give them ownership.ย

I also took a lot of time with my first hire, and heโ€™s now mentoring the newbies. Of course, I make sure heโ€™s hitting his own number first. And I use other people on the team to help train so Iโ€™m not doing evvverything.ย

Making less money is temporary- once I have a fully ramped team, everything will level out.ย

every leader role i have done has involved building at least 1 team/org from basically scratch.ย  its hard work but i LOVE it.ย  you dont have to make up for past bad habits or other leaders mistakes.ย  you build your culture how you want it.ย  bad side, if you fail there is no safety net
