Threads like this are what keep me going.... I’m in a cyber security startup selling to enterprise clients right now, and I’m in the early stages of building my book for this company.

read this comment right as I’m starting my first prospecting block of the day - thanks for the extra motivation to get moving!!!

Security is the best industry to sell to hand down! Just make sure you and your brands are doing it the *right* way. No FUD, no ambulance chasing, focus on delighting customers and generating word of mouth amongst practitioners.

I think I got into the wrong security. I'm in physical security and it doesn't seem as promising... or I'm just at the wrong company which could totally be that.

That's unreal and awesome. My frame of reference is so far removed from this so I'm super curious (just a way different enterprise sales role & industry) – what does working a deal like that even look like from prospecting to closing?

$34,643.03 so far, but I've got one scheduled this year that will be at least $85k, if not more.

I scraped by for years, worked shitty jobs and got into sales but was losing deals due to failing products and company policies/gov't restrictions. Seeing these numbers on my earnings spreadsheet feels surreal. The whole last year feels surreal actually. We bought our first house, have baby no. 2 on the way and are set for a few years financially. I just started at this new job in fall 2019, so to anyone struggling out there, keep pounding, keep working, you will succeed.

It is a total grind, had so many rejections and product failures that took me really low at times. Keep at it, believe in what you sell and you will succeed.

Try to have fun too, that helps through the low parts. Even when I was making shit money I still loved what I did.

I got into an industry I liked supporting orgs I was a member of so that was easy. I also got to travel the world, so even a shitty day was a day in a country I had not been to much if ever before.

If you truly believe you have the best solution for a customer then focus on helping see and understand their problem rather than pushing a product. So many buyers are pressured by bad salespeople, I treat every call as a genuine conversation and assume they won't buy from me until they at least want to have a beer with me.

I remember my first $10K commission check. My boss pulled me into the office to congratulate me and tell me how proud he was of me. Was a pivotal moment in my career. The sudden realization of "holy crap I could be rich!" Set a goal to buy a house by the end of that year and squirreled away $40K for a down payment. Ended up selling that house a few years later and pocketing $100K in profit.

I remember the first time I got like $2k in commission and the lightbulb went off too.

I used to be so envious of people in gov't sectors making decent coin with a stable job. Then I realized I can make what they do in a couple of months and setup my own financial security rather than work till I die.

Same here, every paycheque I get is taxed as if that is what I make every time, so commission gets hit extra hard. It is nice to have "extra" forced savings at the end of the year that I didn't account for though.

I've used it to splurge a few times.

1% on all closed business as an Enterprise BDR! Had a few other smaller ones, but this was also our second-largest deal of all time--not a common thing to happen. Though, a peer of mine made ~$25k on the biggest deal along with maxing out his accelerators.

FEELINGS- Your commission is annual (ARR) but the customer paid monthly (MRR) and if there is a churn in the next few months, the company will deduct by increasing your quota and taking the equivalent amount $$ from your quota in the next month.
