Your Manager

From what I've seen... there are many people in "Sales Management" that have no idea what they’re doing.

Some (no joke) have never closed a deal and they're "coaching reps". No idea how they got there, other than their connection/relationship to a higher up. 🤦‍♂️

So I'm very curious:

  • What does your manager do (good things) that really do help you succeed?

  • What does your manager do that is completely un-helpful to you and/or wastes your time?

  • Bonus: what do you wish they'd do to help you and the team?

Good things my manager does:

Actually coaches me, helping shores up weaknesses, but really encouraging me to build and utilize my strengths more than anything.

Invests in career progression mapping with me, and also mentors me to an extent.

Gets involved in the bigger deals to help bring them home.

Honestly, those are the most important things a manager can do. Help you in the short term, and long term. How a sales manager got into leadership without ever closing a deal is beyond me. Sounds like the org fucked up with that hire.

@TheSolicitorGeneral nice.

Yeah - the one manager I'm referring to came from marketing and has never carried a bag and has none of the skills necessary to sell or coach. It's embarrassing for everyone.

Sales Training & Enablement
I think this points to the fact that a lot of companies (particularly in the startup realm) don't have the budget or time to source experienced managers. Additionally, it's common to just push high-performing reps into manager roles without actually giving them any sort of training on how to be a manager or what they minimum requirements / expectations are for them as a new manager.

To answer your questions:

- Allows me to brainstorm solutions to problems and gives me the opportunity to fail and learn from my mistakes.

- I think I'm not alone in that managers typically have too many meetings, and I think meetings should be cut unless they have value that needs to be communicated face to face. Can this be done via email, slack, recording?

- The best managers that I have protect my time from other outside influences and also define our priorities early on in the year to give us a roadmap. We haven't really done that this year yet.

From this post I think you are trying to say you have experience with shit managers - lots are - generally the outdated, neanderthal ones!
