Your vs. You're

This is one of my largest pet peeves. Professionally and socially.

I feel like the differences are taught in 3rd grade along with the differences of there, their, and they're.

Just got an email from a client who used you're instead of your and got triggered. I find myself judging the root of people's intelligence when I see these used incorrectly.

I've absentmindedly made this mistake plenty of times in my life but I just automatically assume the person who uses the incorrect one is not smart. An aggressive assumption I know, but it's just such a simple concept to grasp, like c'mon.

Anyone else feel the same?

Ooo thatโ€™s another good one. And the apostrophe after the โ€œsโ€ when using a word ending in โ€œsโ€ in the possessive (ie. Marcusโ€™ car)

I tend to leave the apostrophe off more than i like to say so im like youre but lazy is better than dumb lol.ย

Another is when they overuse I instead of Me. I is not the failsafe sometimes me is correct and never used.ย

I and me is a good one, but I think there's generally more leeway. Who and whom as well - I mess that up all the time though.

It annoys me a lot, too. We learned this in elementary school. If you aren't the best in language skills, use a resource like Grammarly.

I also detest when people send emails that look like a text message from a seventh grader:

"ya i can meet @ 2 pm tmrw"ย

Is that how you address your clients? Jeez.ย

Exactly. I'm a huge Grammarly guy as I find myself comma splicing alllll the time. Great tool for a multitude of scenarios.ย

I can't stand that type of messaging/emailing in a professional setting. Might as well show up to the meeting in sweats.

For the companies out there that do an assessment test for all potential new hires, they should all have questions on the correct usage of your/you're, there/their/they're, affect/effect, either/or/neither/nor, etc etc. And anyone that get's them wrong is immediately disqualified. Likewise, proper use of commas and apostrophes should be a critical pass.ย

First of all, I feel attacked. I am a serial comma-splicer. However, I'm also a huge grammar nerd. I just can't unlearn 'wherever it feels natural to take a breath in the sentence, put a comma right there!' (<-- comma splice) Mrs. Augustine really screwed me in 3rd grade with that one simple sentence!!!

Personally, I grew up on the Oxford comma so I'm partial to it. For me, not using the Oxford comma is like going out without pants - feels naked.

When I see newsletters, websites, or really any official documents with mistakes like this, it loses all credibility. Now you've made the mistake and gone ahead and tacked on a display of total ineptitude by not proofreading.

Like you should know better, doesn't hurt to proof read your email before sending. I noticed i do a lot of mistakes when i simple compare the email i have in mind vs what I wrote. But well I work in a region where english is not the 1st language of everybody so I don't make a fuss about itย

Definitely a pet peeve of mine, but when trying to fire off personalized emails, I sometimes misspell and don't catch the mistake before I send it. I am one of those people that really beats themself up about grammatical errors, so it does bother me, but I can't let it get to me because a mistake is a mistake, and I have found myself do be doing this more and more recently. Hopefully, I can find a way to live with myself, ha!ย
