Zoom "Camera always on" Culture?

I work for a company that really encourages people to have their camera on in internal meetings, but mandatory for customer meetings. some leaders press less on this for internal meetings and other leaders outright shame people for not having their camera on.

curious what your company's "camera culture" is and if you prefer it or not?

Does your company promote "camera always on" for internal meetings?

A big part of selling is being able to read body language so I am totally fine with it. If I turn mine on, it encourages customers to turn theirs on.

totally agreed, i actually will ask customers to turn their's on if they can to make it more human. for internal meetings curious, because zoom fatigue is real but i balance wanting to see people but also know folks need a break

Not required for internal meetings and I'm thankful. I really don't think it adds anything to the meeting, if anything it's a distraction.

They try to do it and I just uninstalled the camera app and claimed it's no longer working

I enjoyed it more at first (last spring), but now I've got camera fatigue and don't want it on every single time

Love it, you can read so much from clients.

And internally it helps foster a team culture that's been obviously missing for the last year+.

I agree that cameras should be on as much as possible. As a sales person who has presented to "the void" of black screens many times, I don't want to do that to someone else, internally or externally.

That being said, shaming someone for it isn't cool, especially if it's clear that the company wants it to happen. If they don't have it on, its probably for a reason, and if its ongoing enough to be a problem then handle it through the appropriate channels, not in a public manner.

love the call out that if the company has made it a clear desire, why double down on folks?  I also agree as a presenter how much it stinks when no one is on and you're screaming into the void

I've started threatening to do the whole "How's it going?! What?! I said HOWS IT GOING" thing if people don't engage when I'm talking to the void. Seems to work.

Depends on the type of meeting, but for the more serious ones cameras on

Seeing each others face adds some kind of trust in our minds. So I don't mind

I've got a face for radio, but it allows me to connect better with my prospects/customers and read their body language/facial cues. I find it super helpful

F2F virtually makes convos sound more realistic. I'd be fine with it. Won't mind cams being on

Every internal call has a camera. It’s exhausting.
