Internal non-linear promoitions (SDR to channel sales) advice on conversations

Hi everyone, with new QBR Just happening today leadership has announced their headcount for the FY and a great opportunity for the channel sales in APAC has opened up. I'm a BDR right now but have been working with the partners since back in September last year to get them up and enabled, and so far have brought in circa 10 opportunities alongside them.

I've done a ton of enablement for partners and have secured some time for a meeting next week with the channel sales director for a chat to discuss the role. Has anyone got advice on what I should potentially prepare for the conversation? At this point it's a coffee chat for him to give me a good overview of the role and us to discuss my success in channel sales so far to see if I would be a good fit.

I haven't have now mentioned this to my direct manager either as I just pinged the director on slack after the QBR. Best to tell my manager and then prepare?

Now that you've told your manager, I'd talk to that manager and have a coffee chat there as well.ย  ย Get as much feedback and advice (support) as you can.ย  ย If your manager has been developing you all along, s/he knows the next step will be for you to move on, and should be supportive of that and willing to help guide you.ย  ย

If you enjoy channel sales and working with partners, why not?ย  I've seen incredibly successful partner reps, and I've seen some successful partner managers move back into Enterprise sales when they decided they wanted a change.ย  ย It could be a good place for you for the next few years.

What you can ask is what you'd ask of any manager:ย  their view of the role, their expectations, etc., and you can ask about how they view the day to day activities and success criteria.ย  ย You'll ultimately have a compensation conversation as well.ย  ย

Definitely tell your manager. Not a good look to go behind their back.

100%, nothing worse than blindsiding someone that could be a champion for you internally

Why wouldn't you go to your manager first on the path you see for yourself?ย

Fully agree with this. If your manager cares about your development theyโ€™ll be receptive to your wanting a change. If theyโ€™re not, well, thatโ€™s a different kind of answer and LinkedIn jobs might be you next stop

It's dependent on the org.

You're on the right track now. Meet with the stakeholders, tell them why you want the job and why you think you'll succeed, then ask if they have any reservations.

If yes, listen and lean in, then come up with a plan to prove your progress and book a check in meeting.

If no, then say, "great, how do we get started?"

I say tell your manager youโ€™re looking and see what they think. Theyโ€™ve obviously got some more tenure because theyโ€™re in a higher role, which means theyโ€™ve been around the block, which means theyโ€™ve seen a lot of stuff happen. Usually that means theyโ€™ve witnessed moves or transfers and can give you the whatโ€™s what about it
