What is your company's policy on taking days off?

I think as long as we have PTO we are allowed to take days, but the moment that is out, we are not allowed to be taking days..which sucks, cuz like shyt happens like sickeness.. lol. But even then it seems like if our PTO is used for personal stuff like vacation, it's an issue. Maybe I am reading into it wrong but its weird. When I have taken days off with PTO, they want an explanation, & proof. Same when requesting UNPAID days off...I've never had a job like that, & just find it strange lol..THIS IS HR not my Manager

So what is your policy and how does your HR act or manager?

If you don't feel comfortable taking time off at a company, you may want to reevaluate that company.

That's a red flag. If I want or need time off I just text my boss and log it in our system, full stop. Your PTO is your time.

That sounds weird and frustrating. At every sales job I’ve had, you request PTO and 99% of the time it’s approved. I’ve only seen it declined if a whole bunch of other ppl on the same team already booked that day off and coverage is needed (usually around the holidays.)

Nobody has ever asked me what I’m using the days for aside from casual conversation with my boss where I might mention I’m travelling/going to a wedding etc. Nothing formal. If some random from HR was inquiring I’d tell them I was headed to the Nunyabiznass Resort on Fukoff Island.

My current company is one of the few that truly do offer unlimited PTO. We're actually pushed to take at least 2 weeks off a year. Pretty simple process as well. Just give a heads up to the head shed and take the time off.

Previous company made us "earn" PTO. Basically we got 5 hours for every pay period that we worked. The process for getting your request to use the PTO that you had banked was arbitrary and stupid. The way I saw it, if I had to earn it, I was going to use it when I wanted. I stopped asking for permission and just took it off and logged it in gusto. Had one ass chewing where I told HR I wasn't going to stop doing it.

I was already looking to quit so I wasn't too concerned about getting canned if it came down to it. Also didn't care to burn that rickity ass bridge.

PTO should be for anything - and you shouldn't need to give a reason.  Its none of their business.  They shouldn't be asking, but if they do just say its for some "personal reasons".

Unpaid time off though is a tricky matter.  The only time I even requested it was years ago and it was for a 3 week event (2 weeks of PTO + 1 week of non-PTO).  I was way above quota so that helped.  Still, when I returned, there were some people who were unhappy about my long vacay.

Maybe the lesson learned here is to be more selective with the days you take as PTO?  That, or finding one of those companies which give you unlimited PTO (which is its own potential disaster).

You don't get seperate sick days? Also how much time off are you taking that you are dipping into unpaid time?

PTO is PTO. You should not have to give them info on what you did.
If you have unlimited PTO you should be able to do what you want, within reason. But they have decided to give you PTO so if they hassle you about using it, it's like if I give you a plate of tacos to eat and you eat them, then getting mad that you ate those tacos.

Like wtf

Sounds very weird and uncomfortable.   PTO shouldn't need a reason, as it's uncategorized specifically so you don't have to specify sick vs "I need a day just because".

We have unlimited PTO, but it has to be approved. Normally, I just do what I have to do abs block off my calendar. If I have to work on an impromptu vacation/long weekend, so be it.

I have unlimited PTO and am encouraged to use it as long as I'm on target to hit my number. One guy took 3 weeks off last month and it wasn't an issue. If you're taking a bunch of time and missing quota then it becomes and issue.

also if I got a message from HR asking why I need the time, my response would be "because I have X amount of vacation days to use each year" and that's all they would get

Unlimited PTO here with a mandatory 2 weeks off company-wide each year.  I don't think I can ever go back to another company that's running such a lean operation that your absence is frowned upon.  If you feel like you're mentally strained... change your gig.  There are too many opportunities out there for you to feel this way.
