AMA with Title

Hello, is this thing on?

Big fan of this community, pretty engaged in here when I'm doing my best to not fall asleep at my desk...

All jokes aside I've been in sales for ~9 years now. As someone who has sold 0 in a quarter and then gone on to be the top overall rep in an org, been promoted, laid off and fired there's lots I have seen and done. With still more to come.

I can't see myself doing anything other than sales and if you would like to discuss professional life, golf, pro sports, smoking or grilling meats, best rubs to use for said meats or just shoot the general shit.

Fire Away and lets have some fun on this Wednesday.

What was the magic sauce to go from 0 to 10? What behaviors did you change?

The quarter with 0 was a bit of an anomaly, that Q Covid hit and when I was supposed to get 2 big contracts signed they paused and pushed to 6 months later, going to 10, I said fuck it, and started being myself on calls with prospects instead of a rigid sales person

Good call! Rigid does not work. Struggling with one on my team and they are a challenge to coach on top of that. They list and send specs thats about it

Favorite way to do a rib eye is on open flame with salt pepper garlic powder and onion powder right before I take them off the grill I melt a knob of butter on top. Pastrami I make the brine and cure it for 6 days. Ribs I love using salt pepper, garlic powder, ground mustard, small dash of cinnamon and then 3 hours in apply some apple juice, finish with some bbq sauce and let it set. Hope this answers the question

Based on your career experiences, I can see why you have taken a liking to golf. All jokes aside, I have a weird question but Iโ€™m actually interested - Do you play better, the same, or worse golf when youโ€™re selling better?

My golf game has little connection to professional world. I feel like itโ€™s my time to disconnect from work and life in general so so donโ€™t know if it gets impacted by anything other than me trying to figure out this crazy game. Hope that answers the question
3
Founding BDR
That makes sense. Wish I was able to disconnect bc when I had a bad week or something, I tend to get frustrated a lot easier on the course and the score fully reflects it. The game can either clear my mind or do the exact opposite.

Hereโ€™s the thing, I accept I will never be a pro golfer, when I go out to play I grab my speaker, throw on the tunes and I usually walk with a push cart, I donโ€™t drink very often and I admire the challenge of the individual hole. I also used to caddie and worked on a course for 8 years so thereโ€™s that factor. I play a lot as a single so if I get paired with people itโ€™s also a good distraction.

In the quarter that you did 0, how did you work on your mindset to become top perfomer? What is the best rub and meat combo out there?
Justatitle
Big Shot

Account Executive
Mindset wise I try to be at a 5 at all times, nothing is ever that bad and also never that good. I think thatโ€™s why I kept at it and didnโ€™t become glum about a bad quarter. My favorite thing to do is smoke brisket. I will utilize my own rub from time to time but meat church holy gospel on there is incredible

I realize this has been partially covered by @antiASKHOLE and in your response to @pirate , but I've yet to do a brisket on my Traeger.

I don't want to get one that's like 95 pounds as it's just my wife and I and a baby without teeth, but can you give any guidance to get started!?
Justatitle

Ok, love this question, Iโ€™d recommend that you go for quality over size of the brisket. Go to snakeriverfarms or kccattlecompany and order one of their wagyu briskets something 8-10 pounds would be ideal. Trim wonโ€™t be immensely critical on this. For the rub I recommend getting meat church holy gospel and adding brown sugar. 225 until the internal temp reaches 165 then wrap it in foil or butcher paper and let it smoke until 204 temp has been reached and or probe tender. Let it rest for an hour and then your golden

Good to know, I'll take a look. There's also a pretty good butcher not far, all local meat. Won't be Wagyu but tbh I feel like I'd rather experiment for the first time with something quality but not THAT high quality.

What's your smoker of choice?

I have the pro 22, haven't needed to upgrade yet. My next smoker will be a traditional smoker where you need to burn wood in the offset, nothing compares to the flavor that brings.

Yay! A fun AMA.
What's the best way to clean your smoker? I've seen various ways to deal with the Traeger, but with a brand new redwood deck, I'm leery of drippings during a cleaning.

Good Q, Traeger makes an all natural grill cleaning spray that works great. You can also buy a mat to put under the Traeger. There are various companies that will let you design your own as well.

Biggest difference you observed in yourself from your 0 quarter to your top one?
Also, Salt and Black Pepper ONLY for Brisket.
Justatitle

I think the biggest difference was I became pretty meticulous about pipeline and knowing what needed to be done next to get the deal won. Sounds simple but becoming obsessed with that was the difference. Love salt and pepper for brisket I also like utilizing some additional spices from time to time

Which spices?
My experience isn't as lengthy, but I went through a similar down and up period.
First AE role I barely hit 20% on a given monthly quota, then got laid off and several deals came in a few days later.
Learned a ton though, as it was essentially a purely outbound role.
A key thing that has allowed me to be successful has been meticulous pipeline management. The less you let fall through the cracks, the better off you'll be...

Yes, I started a business last year which is at grass roots, did more rev in year 1 than I expected, only way to grow it is by buying more inventory though which is expensive. It will likely take 3-5 years before it gets as big as I need it to

If the benefits of a F100 company werenโ€™t so great, Iโ€™d probably do the same. Iโ€™m enjoying the coasting (somewhat coasting), with minimal stress right now. Creating something would make sense (I have a couple of thoughts that projects Iโ€™m helping/advising on), but family life has to have its time to shine right now.

Have 3 kids all under age six, I get the family time. F100 is solid and great to hear that you are in that kind of position, wouldnโ€™t say Iโ€™m coasting but my job is pretty easy because I know what has to be done and itโ€™s a matter of discipline and execution. My side gig is a party rental business in the tri-state area and so I get to spend time with my kids doing that because friends rent my stuff for parties and my kids are always there

I didn't know sales was my thing until I started to consistently come close or exceed quota, I find that to this day I still question if I am cut out for it but that subsides quickly. I think I have the mental makeup to handle sales and also realize that everyone has a shelf life in this game.

Two questions here bud, what's the most expensive meat piece or steak you had a chance to cook and if it's taste deserves it's actual cost .
And why in meat&fish in general and Salmon and Tuna in particular the prices widely vary for the same portion, just curious thanks.
Justatitle

Prime rib. I do it every year for the holidays and usually itโ€™s north of 300 to get. In my opinion itโ€™s totally worth it as a one time treat. For meat and fish itโ€™s really a matter of supply and demand along with labor to acquire the fish or meat. Rib eyes and porterhouse are your most in demand cuts and they are also the highest quality usually. Sirloin and such are cheaper because thereโ€™s more of it and the quality of the meat drastically changes. Salmon farm raised is cheaper than wild caught. But if you want to really lose your mind look up the price of king crab or a Tasmanian crab and youโ€™ll need a crane to lift your jaw off the floor
