Is territory management/assignment always a frustrating/disjointed project for organizations to take on?

It seems regardless of whether Im at a small startup or a multi billion dollar tech behemoth - companies have a really hard time creating and assigning territories to their reps. Working through this process now and there is so many points that need further clarification and managers are frustrated and obviously the sellers on their team.

Oh god yea - and the promises of it's completion by SKO, then end of Jan, then they're just like "fuck it, run with these accounts".

Scoping territories is a tough game. Data is your friend.

The biggest challenge IMO is year-over-year changes. There are so many variables.

Did that territory perform like it did because of...
- The rep?
- A specific industry concentration?
- Macroeconomic factors?
- Regulatory factors?
- Local leadership within your company?
- The customer relationship?

Lots of things to balance to try to keep territories 'fair' between reps while enabling continuity.

Far more nuanced than assigning quotas, which should not be as hard or mysterious as it's made out to be.

Always an issue!   The worst is when bad data drives these decisions.   Then you spend the next week tracking every account down and redlining the results to send to your manager and SOPs about how borked it all is.   Fun times.  I do not miss it.

It can be tough but it has to be done by total addressable market and "equally" spread out as much as possible
