down voters are marketing spies
I think the unwritten rule is to not rub it into the non-travelling employees faces.

When you discuss travel with them, you mention the hotel (never the room - hellllooooo upgrades), the always eating out (never the great meals), the boring meetings (not the events after).

I don't post photos to social media, I don't announce on LI when/what conference I'm headed to. I know I'd hate it if the roles were reversed.

I appreciate that, and respect it. To me, it depends on who's talking about the travel. As a BDR, if I listen to a successful rep who's been in sales 5+ years talk about incredible places they've traveled, it inspires me to reach that point in my own career. But if it's someone who's either in the same position I am, or in an unrelated role, it can definitely be annoying and discouraging.

It's a pretty mixed bag honestly.

The bad: I've had way too many trips that were in and out in under 24 hours and had 6+ hours of flying. I've gotten three hours of sleep in a hotel because my 10pm flight was cancelled and I got rebooked on a 5am. I've been to Vegas a soulsucking amount of times. I've been in "great locations" that I didn't get to see.

That being said: I've gotten to spend a weekend in Boston for St. Patrick's day with friends, gotten to go to sweet sporting events, stayed in insane hotel rooms due to overbooked hotels, etc.

The best part is the people. I don't really give a shit about where I go as much as getting to see my broader network. We have some stuff in Q3 and I have so many colleagues and friends who I haven't seen in a year. THAT I'm pumped for.

Love me the Keys!

Florida native here and the keys are quite the place. It's a whole other world compared to most of the tourist destinations in the state (Orlando, Miami, etc.) and if you want to have a party time you just get down to Key West, which I also lovingly refer to as Mini-Tropical New Orleans.

Fairbanks, Alaska was pretty dope a few years back. Drove by the last Blockbuster store and made a visit to North Pole (the town, not the actual pole) to see the giant Santa Claus. Northern Lights one of the nights was the highlight, though.

Everyone thinks I am crazy but I love work trips to NYC.  Great food, tons of entertainment options 7 days a week at all hours.  Nothing better than popping in the headphones after a day of meetings and roaming around Manhattan.

Could never live in Manhattan but always love a good reason to visit.

I spent a couple of years traveling to all kinds of places for conferences/trade shows. Everyone thought it was so cool that I got to go to Vegas, Palm Springs, Miami, Austin, etc.

What they don't know is that I would spend 7am to 7pm in the conference hall then eat alone at the hotel bar and pass out at 9. Never really got to explore those places.

I've never had a job that required much travel. I went to Toronto once for corporate training, it was fun but also kind of lame because Toronto is a cool city and all I got to see was the inside of our office, the walk to the hotel, and a few restaurants.

I'd like to travel for work a few times a year.

We had a conference in Cancun every year for a week and it was always great.

From a work travel standpoint at one point in my career I lived in Chicago and was responsible for my company's East Coast business.  This allowed me to be in either NYC, Boston, Philly, DC, etc every other week.  I basically ate a lot of amazing food and saw a lot of different baseball stadiums.

Vegas for expo/conference. I rarely had to go outside because the hotels were so huge. I'm at the age where I can meet a few friends for a drink and still make it to customer meetings/sessions the next day without going overboard like some younger reps might do (and I did a few years ago!).

That said, I did enjoy some Cohiba's inside the Venetian while playing poker, a Knights game (great stadium, atmosphere, and walkable on the strip), and a fantastic old-fashioned (or 3).

Second would be SF for sales training. Great city but sorta dirty in spots with upscale areas. Good food and the Giants stadium (we went to a game with our onboarding class) is right on the bay. Not a bad view there.

I was doing 80k miles a year pre-Covid. Mostly all over US/Canada with some trips to Mexico, Italy, and a few other spots in Europe.

That was too much. The first two times to most US cities are fun, but it's diminishing returns. It's not that I hated heading out for travel, but it's a lot of work and at the end of the day you're still headed to that lonely hotel room. So I ended up getting fucked up and spending money too often to curb the boredom. A Nintento Switch and some books helped a bit, and I started making it a point to work out, but we are social animals and I more often than not found myself at the hotel bar yacking it up with fellow boozebags in the territory.

Italy was great but I was always in Milan (manufacturing). That's a beautiful city don't get me wrong, but it's not as cool the 5th or 6th or 7th time.

I don't regret it at all because I got to see a ton of stuff around North America that I probably wouldn't have gotten to see if I wasn't travelling for "free", and getting status with airlines and hotels is nice (try to keep your own miles), but I'm hoping COVID cuts future travel in half. There were a lot of "fly in for a meeting and then fly out" trips that were in hingsight fairly unnecessary.

Living out of a suitcase and in airports so often gets supes old too.

Now I've got a couple of kids and me being gone 3 weeks out of the month is a no bueno too.

Thank you so much for the well thought out response. I was one of those kids, with my dad traveling 3 weeks out of the month for work and I could see the toll it took on him. Honestly seeing that toll on him was worse than the effect him being gone so much had on my siblings and I. Of course, we missed him and hated when he had to travel for work, but understood he was always doing it to make life better for the family. I'm sure your kiddos understand that as well!

The best by far was Whistler, BC for a partner summit in February 2020, one of the last events before covid.

The other BDR at my previous company and I left to get better jobs in the same industry at a similar time. The company he joined hosted its first-ever partner summit at Whistler ski resort, and my new agency happened to still have a small and not very active relationship with them. He invited me and I was able to justify attending by using a discretionary expense account I negotiated for in my initial offer. The event included free lift tickets and awesome Apres-ski parties.

I even got my ski rental expense approved by classifying it as "networking transportation."

I think getting into the finance sector on the sales end right now is an excellent sales industry. Compensation is phenomenal, uncapped commission. Lot of hard work but I do mortgages and I love it. I run my own show. Wealth management is the same, very lucrative but you need to hunt and have a process. Be able to identify a target market and build an extensive network referral relationships with other business professionals.
