Needing advice - fired by it before hr reach out

Started a new AE role 3 months ago. Just got messaged on slack by IT that today was my last day. Sorry tomorrow. I said what? They said we received request. Reached out to VP and he said I’m digging into this now. HR just called me and told me it’s true they know I’m going through a lot of personal things and stress wanted to talk about different options and that IT wasn’t supposed to reach out. HR was going to talk to me. I started having a panic attack/hyperventilating so HR said they are so sorry and go to give me some time and call me back.

Will this qualify for unemployment? What are my options? Has this happened to anyone before? Really needing advice on how to handle this.

Damn. That's really odd. How does your boss not know if you've been let go or not?

Sorry to hear this. But yes, you'll qualify for unemployment, if in fact you're unemployed and this wasn't some colossal fuck up.

That really sucks.   That is no way to communicate to anyone!

But yes, any time you are let go, you qualify for unemployment, and that is one thing HR definitely owes you information on.

I'm sorry, what an awful situation to be in.

That REALLY sucks and completely unprofessional.  Yes, you do qualify for unemployment.

I would consider reaching out to an employment lawyer about any possible workplace trauma issues.  I doubt anything would come of it, but it may be worth exploring.

This SUCKS. And that was highly unprofessional on their behalf.

Sorry you're going through the personal stuff and then this on top.

You'll get unemployment though, so don't stress about that.

You're lucky it just fired you. Usually prefers to scare the shit out of people before eating them alive.

On a serious note, I'd be pissed if I was you. Yes you qualify for unemployment. Try to get a job with the competition and make them regret pulling that shit.

To top it off. I pinged my VP this morning to give me a quick call, and we talked about some of the things going on in my personal life and I told him I just want to keep the communication open, and keep him informed. Told him I am absolutely still dedicated to this job and putting my all into this and he said thank you for taking the time to do this. Told me let him know how he can help what resources I need. And he will help me. And then we went into some prospecting talk for the week. Completely blindsided.

My manager did have a talk with me three weeks ago about my activity, but it turned out her reports were pulling over half my activity. She left on maternity leave right after. I Was never on a pip or even had anything l mention to me about anything about goals I needed to hit or anything to let me know my job was at risk.

This sucks. Fuck this company. You'll be okay because there are tons of companies hiring right now.

I do have a question for the rest of the community. I’m a pretty bad ass bartender and can definitely fall back on that for a while. But will it look bad if I take a break on my resume and just bartend til I figure out whats next?

I've had to do the same (back in the dotcom crash).   Economic upturn was a valid reason for a gap.   Do what gets you through.

I would say it totally depends on how long the “break” is. If less than a year (arbitrary time frame that seems reasonable to me, but not based on data), I’d say no worries - especially after the last couple of years. You should be able to find another role within a few months if you’re looking while you bartend

Easiest way to check for unemployment qualification is to go to the federal website and check. Typically when a company lets you go you do qualify for it.

Update! I do qualify for unemployment but I would make more bartending in 2-3 days then I would on unemployment so it kind of seems pointless. They did offer a 1 month severance even though I was in the 90 day period because of the whole ordeal.

I was able to get both unemployment + work part time to make up some of the gap.  You'll have to decide what makes the most sense for you.  Glad you got severance.    Best of luck to you.

you'll qualify for unemployment. I would also look into a lawyer and a wrongful termination suit, workplace trauma, something like that. Punish them for being so unprofessional. You can find an attorney that only charges you based on what you win in the suit so you won't have to pay anything up front or at most a small retainer.
