New job opportunities- what would you do?

Finally back in the war room after a long absence. Was looking for some advice.

Some background, I’m a top performing SMB AE. I think I want to have the fairly typical SMB > mid-market > enterprise career progression. The challenge is the mid market team here underperforms across the board.

One other option would be to manage my team, but there are multiple people much more tenured than me gunning for this role. I’m also concerned going straight to SMB Manager without upmarket selling experience would be career limiting.

Current situation: I am in final interview stages for another SMB AE role, more complicated sell for me, roughly 40% OTE increase, 12 month promotion path to MM (most people in the office got promoted start of this year so I believe this), all SMB/MM reps hit quota last year (saw a breakdown to verify this), doubling region headcount this year.

My question is, do you think this is the right move? It’s definitely a strong job market and I’ve been hit up for various mid-market/SMB Manager/SDR Manager roles. Is a safe lateral move the right call, or should I be aiming higher?

The fact that your in house mid market team doesn't make target wouldn't make me want to take that role either.  And, unless you are really interested in managing a team rather than being an IC, those roles are out as well.   The new gig sounds interesting, and a 40% lift is a pretty good incentive.

Have you gotten tangible offers for higher?

My LinkedIn inbox has been bombarded and I’ve been told a 50-60% increase on current OTE for a mid market role would be realistic, but this is the only opportunity I’m seriously pursuing. Seems to be very much quantity overly quality with roles right now.

I guess you could hold out, but if you are happy with the opportunity, you could move forward.   On its face, it sounds like a decent opportunity with a good plan to move up and be successful right away and when you move up.

Hard to turn down 40% increase!

If you're heart's not telling you leadership then don't force it. Especially managing your former team. I did that once and it was quite awkward.

The only thing that's slightly concerning is "doubling region headcount this year". Make sure they don't carve too much.

Agreed, that was my only concern but they’re very new to the region. Office is under two years old so lots of market opportunity but also sufficiently established so that I wouldn’t be starting from scratch. Territory where I am is also being reduced across geography and industry with additional reps for 2022 as well.

I wouldn't necessarily have confidence in it only being a year but the pay sounds like it could work IF half of that 40% is your base.

Yep, both roles are 50/50 splits so it’s equivalent base and comms increase. Agreed, nothing is guaranteed but essentially the entire team has been promoted at the start of this year. Only reason they looked externally for this role is there literally wasn’t anyone internally that could fill it.

Chili Piper and Calendly links reek of desperation. Ask for availability for a certain week, not day. Not pushy, yet somewhat targeted.
