Side Gig/Hustle

I feel like with working from home I have so much extra energy in the day and I don't want to just spend time watching tv/sports or  on my phone. I hear a lot of people on social media talking about a side gig. I feel like it has two extremes of driving for Uber/Lyft or starting their own company. I live in the city so I don't have a car and don't have the capital or urge to start my own business.

I feel like their should be some middle ground between the two that would make sense to potentially do so I have even more financial freedom. I have read stuff about over employed but like my job so would not want to put that in jeopardy.

any interesting side you have heard of people doing?

Sell more, make more money, have more financial freedom.

Hustle culture it a bullshit way to say you don’t know how to negotiate your salary or gain skills. Be better at your day job and you won’t need an extra one.

I…have to disagree.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with setting up multiple streams of income if you want to one day be financially “free”.

Unless you’re a freak the chances of you W2’ing $1m yearly and getting into retirement earlier than everyone else is quite low.

If you can find a way to create systems where you make money while sleeping then you can one day get to where you don’t have to wake up and work for someone else.

Just my .02c as some random stranger on the internet.

A side hustle as an online CS rep vs a diversified asset portfolio are not the same thing.

Yes agree with your sentiments. I think there is a point where if you sell enough and have enough extra $$ after whatever your financial priorities are that you can invest that in…businesses with a good cash flow, rental Realestate or flipping Realestate with friends etc. business is business if you’re smart enough to manage a p&l sheet of your own you can make it happen.

Agreed, but I think that is a far cry from what most people think of as a side hustle.

Let’s face it - lifestyle with single job as source of income in today’s market is single point of failure. The jobs we do in Sales and related roles has lot of dependencies and randomness. We operate in probabilistic world - you can be very good at your job but if product market industry and geo politics mess up something - you will be affected.

On other hand the advice “get better at your job so you will not need to find side gig “ is for roles in definitive world - doctor , lawyers, programmer , plumbers, fireman - in these roles when you sharpen your skill set it turns into an asset over a long period of time.

I am not saying it is easy to find second stream of income but for roles like ours you should not stop looking.

12, Leadership for the past 6. That may be the difference—I built and deliver a skillset to a certain stage company that is hard to do without.

I know somebody who makes custom golf clubs.   It's something he enjoys, and he gets paid.    Sounds very similar!

most likely social media and word of mouth unless he's one of the big private custom club companies (i.e. Artisan Golf who does custom work)

Build your brand, learn about your Industry or even an industry you’re interested in then write some articles or LinkedIn post about it (you spend enough time writing sales emails about it). If you’re allowed, use your company cred to get them published or send them over to your marketing team for the company blog, my past companies were always desperate for content. Sales reps are increasingly forced to build a market expertise so your side hustle will benefit and inform your main hustle. Next time you move jobs you won’t just have quota to point at but you will look like an industry expert.

Screw driving Uber/Lyft, that is a waste of resources and ultimately doesn't help you grow at all.

Use the extra time to improve yourself: read books, take a class (I'm currently going through the Salesforce Trailhead in pursuit of an administrator certification), go to the gym, etc.

It's not terrible. Trailhead actually makes it pretty simple to follow (and it's free!)

My career path is in sales leadership, and I feel like having "SF admin" on my resume could be helpful. Plus I'm a software nerd at heart, so I actually enjoy this kind of stuff!

I frequent some obscure auction sites and try to buy low and resell high.  Makes me a couple bucks.

What I did to start was kept my LI on "open to opportunities" and when smaller start ups were looking for sales help I would respond that I wasn't interested in a full time job, but I would advise for the company for free if they let me put it up on my resume and on my LI profile.

Gave them like an hour a week of help and got a few nice points on my profile so eventually I could start charging people for it. Even got into full time consulting for a bit, but I wouldn't recommend that unless you love working 24/7. Now I do one or two projects on the side and can charge like $200/hour.

Free. Money.

Man, this advice is gold. In what role were you when you started doing it?

Did you advise on sales strategy, building pipeline, or everything?

Gangsta move, man. Motivating shit for sure. @E_Money

Thanks guys, I say advise to what you know. Nothing looks dumber than offering to be an adviser and not knowing wtf you're talking about. I started when I was still an SDR and would advise brand new companies on SDR shit.

Basically you probably know a lot more than you think so leverage that.
