"Time Blindness" and the workplace

I recently heard about this individuals situation, and I am really curious what you degenerates make of this shituation.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12298773/TikToker-claims-suffers-TIME-BLINDNESS.html TikToker claims she suffers from TIME BLINDNESS The user, Chaotic Philosopher, posted the video on TikTok and said she thought businesses that 'cut off' employees who 'struggle with being on time' need to be dismantled.

I have ADHD (without the hyperactive component) and time management is a common challenge associated with that but even I think this is bullshit.

Just because I perceive time differently doesnโ€™t mean the world should stop turning to accommodate me. Thatโ€™s a ridiculous expectation.

Bingo. And ADHD without the hyperactive component is usually ADD - but I'm happy to be corrected here.

I used to refer to it as ADD but a doctor told me once that it all falls under the ADHD umbrella now which seems weird because I would assume you would want more clear differentiation between hyperactive vs non-hyperactive but what the hell do I know?

I hear ya. I was officially diagnosed with ADHD by a specialist WHILE I was detailing the drug I was selling at the time. I wasn't even a patient.
She is now the main physician for everyone in my entire family.

They're now treating ADHD like a spectrum, similar to how many different brands of autistic behavior are now on the autism spectrum as a whole.

I mean, Iโ€™m not really equipped to take a stand on either side of that fence. I can say from experience that it sucks when people dismiss ADHD as bullshit or nothing, so Iโ€™d like to see it taken more seriously, but its all a matter of degrees.

I think most people acknowlege ADHD as a condition but I think people reject how parents and individuals often use it as a catch-all excuse for their kid's or their own shit behavior. Such as "I can't get out the door on time becuase muh adhd".

Itโ€™s an explanation, not an excuse. The positive in having a diagnosis is that you at least have some idea of what youโ€™re working with. And there are countless strategies available to help deal with some of the traits of ADHD out there.

Or I feel like developing workplace blindness. Or sales blindness. Hmm prospect blindness.

I think that employer should within reason accommodate for parents (picking kids from daycare, schools, hobbies etc.) Also some flexibility in areas where commute within certain hours means horrid traffic jams. Otherwise I don't quite get this.

I have ADHD and a learning disability. This might be too accommodating to "the establishment," but I've made it my goal so that no employer or teacher would know in most circumstances. I have my MBA, and I've worked in marketing, sales, and operations.

I've done that by creating my own working methods and coping skills and knowing my limitations.

You can have challenges. You can have struggles. You can be neurodivergent. But it's your job to figure out how to accommodate that and advocate for yourself when you can't make it work. But adjust yourself first.

This is when people want additional benefits because they feel like they deserve it. Nothing more really. If they do Ana amazing job besides this, then it isnโ€™t an issue. When they suck at their job or miss meetings/deadlines., then it is an issue

Itโ€™s Adhd related. Very common. Neurotypicals wonโ€™t understand this because not everyone has Adhd.

- Doesnโ€™t mean that itโ€™s Okay though. I am diagnosed with adhd and the medication helps me a lot with this. I can manage time well and most of this is solved.

As an employer...WTF!?
Punctuality is one of the ten things you can control. If you cannot show up to work on time daily, what does that say to the rest of the employees?
This is not fair to the Sales Rep who is hungover and stumbled his way in on time. Or the parent who was up all night with their sick kids.
What if you set a time with a customer to meet and show up late? What does that say about our company and how we "Value" our customers?
I would never hire someone who asked for Time Blindness accommodations. I am all ears if you have something legitimate that needs to be considered. But laziness doesn't fly in my book.

I grew up in a family with siblings on the spectrum and know plenty more with it. As a result of that, I am overly passionate and a stickler about this in my personal life.

If you can't be on time for important stuff, you don't consider it important/aren't respecting those who know it to be important. It shows a lack of effort and maturity to address your issue head-on.

Do I expect perfection? No way. Have I been late: of course and we all have. There's a difference though between someone who acknowledges, actively works on, and takes ownership of the issue and someone who wants to blame others for their lack of willingness to improve.

I want to be clear: if the full story is true, she absolutely should not have been yelled at which is a red flag in/of itself and I can emphasize that there are things about ASDs that I will never understand. However, this so-called 'time blindness' is generally an excuse from what I've seen.

IMHO, Time blindness = lack of discipline and effective prioritization of tasks.

If this is an issue for you, you have really two options:
1 - Figure out what combination of behavioral modification, medication, and possibly therapy will help you right the ship so you can keep pursuing the career that's being threatened by time blindness.

2 - Pursue a career path that is more accommodating to your time blindness.
