Trying to read the room

I recently was with some coworkers (who are predominately older than me) and we began to talk about mental health.

The veterans of the group talked about how necessary it was to be successful in sales.

What do y'all think?

Do you see a therapist/psychologist?

Shout out to all of the ADHD sellers out there. Thank heavens I found this field because I don't think I could handle a normal office job without dying inside.

I’m going to get distracted and bounce to something else wherever I work.

I’ve found that by “controlling the bounce” I can maintain productivity.

I can do that better at home.

hmmm thats interesting. do you feel you have more control of your environment at home?

I also wear headphones all the time, stand up, sit down, use the walking treadmill, take 1,000 breaks. none of those things i would have been able to do in an office haha

I’ve never worked in an office space… I think there are just less things around me that I can do instead of work when I’m outside of my apartment. Less distractions of things that I own vs just being around people

If I may make a suggestion - and forgive me if you're already doing these things:
1) have a set space for work. Office, room, whatever - somewhere away from everything else (TV, roommates/family) where all you do is work. It should help put some structure into your day if you go to work and you leave work. Close the door if you can to minimize distractions from others coming and going.
2) Don't "just do one thing" that you wouldn't otherwise do at the office. If you wouldn't go put the laundry in, watch TV, hop on the Playstation, turn on the radio, start the dishwasher at the office, don't do that during work hours. Even for someone without ADHD, transitioning to WFH can be very difficult. It takes a good deal of discipline at first.
3) Set yourself a schedule, and stick to it. You're going to have to train yourself to focus and get yourself into a rhythm with work.

And since this is a post about therapy, and others with ADHD have just mentioned how much it has helped them, I'd consider trying therapy to ground yourself in your remote work environment, and getting some strategies together that will work for you.

Best of luck.

PSA: Going to therapy or prioritizing your mental health does not mean you’re “mentally ill” (or a little bitch). A (good) therapist can help with some of these very common situations:
- Anxiety (generalized or specific, like presentation anxiety in front of executives)
- Depression
- Imposter Syndrome
- ADHD
- Addiction Management
- Conflict Management
- and many more!

For example, I have a friend that would be the first to say she doesn’t need therapy because there’s nothing “wrong” with her. I’ve also listened to her complain about her lack of career growth for years, while simultaneously watching her self-sabotage with her behavior. Good example of something that probably needs to be unpacked and addressed by a qualified therapist, but also isn’t commonly seen as a “mental health” issue.

I think my biggest issue is what I suffer from is very common. You highlighted an important thing that these are things many people deal with, yet when you’re going through it, it can feel like you’re the only one

Totally understand. And all the more reason we need to keep working to de-stigmatize therapy.

Think of it this way, colds/flus are also very common, but if it was bothering you enough or keeping you from working, etc, you wouldn’t think twice about going to a doctor, right?

I started therapy at a time in my life when I very much needed it. Today I still see my therapist once every month or two, just for “routine maintenance”.

Can we have an alternative "no" option. I know its a joke and can take one but we really should be normalizing therapy more and not making fun of it.

I went to therapy for the first time this year and I would highly recommend it to anyone. I don't think it's necessary or essential, but it's definitely helpful.

Using the mechanic's analogy, I can change my tires myself but they would do a much better job in a much faster time frame. I see therapists the same way. I can get into a better mindset by myself, but my therapist will help me get there sooner and provides me with tools to maintain healthy habits

I haven't, so I put no, but I don't feel as aggressive about it as the poll is.

I know a lot of people who have benefitted greatly from seeing a therapist. I don't like others telling me something is imperative or necessary. I do think it's something to consider if you're struggling in any way.

Ok…now that I’ve read your other post wondering if your manager is into you, I can confidentially say you should probably think about getting a therapist.

I don't think that it is needed for myself, there are definitely a ton of self help options out there. But for those unwilling to find those and apply, then I can see where some help could come into play.
