Verbal offer shenanigans?

Back at it with an update on another sales savage's job hunt in 2023 - got a verbal offer from a decent company. The problem is that my last interview had been completed last month end of June and their sales director indicated that they were going on a temporary hiring freeze, but that he'd be looking to send a written offer this month. Our last conversation was about 14 days ago when he mentioned that he would be chatting with the co-founder about ending the freeze, but it's been radio silence since then. I have been following up about once a week via email and phone calls (unanswered), and am wondering if I should take any further action on this. And yes, I have also been interviewing with some other companies since then to hedge against them falling through (but all other companies are looking like they have lesser upside on both compensation and culture).

What to do for this particular opportunity while I interview elsewhere?

Keeping rolling with your interviews and move on. The hiring freeze could last for weeks or months. If or when they come back you can reweigh your options. Who knows, maybe you end up landing somewhere better in the near future.

Consider the job gone, and keep looking. If it comes back to life, that’s a bonus.

Keep rolling with interviews. Once you get more offers, let the manager with hiring freeze know and you'd be surprised how it changes things

Keep on interviewing. Hiring freezes never end when hiring managers want them to in my experience

Just focus on other interviews, now a days verbal commitment has no meaning.

What do you do when a sales opportunity slows down? Focus on the others. Agree with others that you keep interviewing. Better too many choices than none at all.

My read on this is if there is a hiring freeze that they are confident is coming to an end soon, they wouldn’t have even mentioned it.

“Looking to send an offer within the month” was the optimistic, hopeful best case scenario to try to hold your interest.

No harm to keep following up but don’t hold out for this. You should be following up with the expectation that you’re just trying to confirm the “no-go” for your own mental health so that way, if it does happen, it’s a pleasant surprise. If it doesn’t happen, you won’t feel defeated.

Other interviews for sure. The freeze is likely still in place unfortunately and they may have said it’s not known for the date it will end.
