Why am I not getting hired for a tech sales role?

Good Afternoon,

I am sure this is a common post here, but to the ones, in this space, I need your feedback. I am currently a senior-level executive in this start-up I helped scale. However, I just received my full equity within the company so I’m ready to transition to the next project. I’m trying to get into tech sales or lead another sales team. My current sector is a real estate investment firm. Why am I not getting interviews for tech sales-related roles? I’m ready to make the jump, but I assume I have hit a break wall. What’s your guy's advice so I can make this transition? Thanks, guys!

With the limited info you provided - everyone's industry is a unique unicorn that one can only understand if they have been in it for 20+ years.  Now we know that's not the case, but in your Sr-level role, would you hire someone at your level if they didn't come in with a boatload of experience in your industry?  Probably not.  Same with Tech.

Not sure what area of tech you wanna get into, but some technologies actually do require a certain amount of education (school or OTJ) to work in it.  And if you're looking at a Sr-level role, most of those go to people they already know.

Definitely a solid point for sure! How would you leverage this experience into software sales? Would it be wise to take an entry like position like AE? It would be way less money but I’m just trying to find the path here.

I guess it depends on what you mean by "Sr Level Executive".  Would your title put you out of the running for an AE position?  No one wants to a hire a VP for an AE job.

BUT...if you're happy where you are at and if you're making good money, I would recommend staying there through the year.  Lots of layoffs right now and often its "last in, first out".

Damn these are all solid points.. so I manage 30 people now, and again I guess I have to figure out how to align this with Tech sales. I do see the layoffs to. Maybe this another reason why I’m not getting interviews. Just very determined to get in this space.

All the above are very good points…. If you haven’t done this already, based on real estate investment, I would probably look into prop tech or fin-tech as that may best align with your background. At the end of the day, achievements are achievements and money is money. If you have the track record of successfully exiting, that may be of enticement to most start up founders and/or companies. On your CV I would<br>Really focus on that. If compass didn’t lay off a bunch of people, which they did, then I’d tell you to look there. But also don’t know what your investments are made up of, so went in a little blind there. Maybe WeWork, but you know what happened there, and also industrious as well. Don’t give up dude. Keep going for it.

Yeah tech sales is having a tough time rn. Way less hiring than there was even 3 months ago at least in sales. Love the suggestion of looking into fintech or something like that! Good luck out there!

None of that experience matters. Get your resume professionally built for tech sales. If you think you can do it yourself.... has it worked yet?? Tough love, homie.

What qualities or experience do you have that make you think you'd be a top 10% sales executive for a high-paying tech company? Figure this out, organize your thoughts, and approach tech recruiters with a tech tailored resume.

Finding recruiters is simple - go to LinkedIn, job postings, and click on the job you're interested in. Typically, if you have the paid version of LinkedIn, you'll see who the recruiter is that posted the role.

You're going to get rejected..... A LOT. But eventually, you'll find a recruiter that believes in you, and will place you in a lower to mid-level sales role.

If you want it though, stay hungry - get after it. Ask questions in here - most of these fools are delinquents, but their high paid, commission hungry prodigies that work for an array of companies. Good luck, bubba.
