Am I being played by my company?

I'm an SDR at my company almost a year, and I am a top performer in AMER but only responsible for one territory and only SDR at my team.

My manager says I will be promoted when I comes a year or 18 months.

However, today they announced a new hire who probably took the job that was supposed to be mine (SMB).

I've setup a 1 on 1 with my manager later this week. What should I do?

You're the top performer of the SDR team...and its a Team of 1?! Isn't that like being Valedictorian of your Home School class?

If you're not at >1 year, you probably shouldn't expect a promotion. And they are probably thinking of adding more headcount as they grow (part of YOUR job).

When you meet up with your manager, I would express my interest in moving to the AE position and the expectation that it will happen soon after your 1 year anniversary.

Sorry for the confusion! We have dozens of SDRs in AMER and I am the only one in the West team. I’m top performer among them but only responsible for a specific territory.

Well, I hate to say it but…this is the way the cookie crumbles when it comes to tech companies and promises.

If they can’t outline a plan, in writing, that moves you into the AE role then it’s time to walk.

^^ This. You want it clear and committed to. With documentation.

If you are the only SDR there is no path up for you until there are others to fill your void. So unless they are going to hire 1-2 more SDRs you’re likely stuck.

You haven't been there for that 12-18 mos the company had stated would be the amount of time you'd be in the role before possibly getting a promotion.
They don't want to wait to get someone in that seat and selling, so they hired someone. It's possible you're not quite ready in their mind, but I have no way to know that.

In your 1:1, you can ask if you're still on track to move to AE, and what you should be working on now to prepare.

Don't forget to continue to do the very best job you can in the role you are currently in. Effort and excellence are going to be important.

Protip... people can't read minds. You need to have the ambition and agency to ask for more. Especially, when it comes to your career. If it is to be... it is up to me.

Ask for it but also look for it elsewhere. Have documentation of your success to show. But also, if you are the only SDR you can't rest on saying you are the top performer.
Be open and communicate what you want to your leaders. Have them outline a plan and make them own it so if they don't perform you can say you did everything you could
