Cold calling the hiring manager

I'm cold calling hiring managers to stand out and "skip the line" for my next AE role.

Since I'm not solving a specific problem, which is typically how I approach my cold calls, I'm not sure how to make the call without just feature dumping myself and asking for time.

Is there any natural way I can cold call these sales managers to show I know how to make a good cold call?

Curious to hear what's worked for you guys/if you have any ideas on how to approach these calls.

Thanks!

Yeah it's simple say "reaching out because I noticed x role open. I do y with z exp and I think it may be good mutual fit. Do you have any interview slots open this week or next?"

If anyone of them get pissy that you called then you probably don't want to work for them anyway so it's a good screening call for you too.

Basic but solid approach. You can try to get creative but no need to overthink it.

My personal fave: reaching out and cold calling like you're selling yourself as the product.

"Hey miguelnelson, my name's Dishpit, I hope you've been well. Listen, I'm calling because I noticed your company revenue's a bit down and I feel you could benefit from a new AE to help boost your revenue even further. Does that sound about right? Great, would you be against a meeting on Thursday at 3p? No? Perfect, I'll see you then."

How would you know the revenue is down? Also this talk track is less than half baked.

How do 3 men in their 30's not have $800 between them?

I like the idea but I just dont know if there's any actual way to do it without overcomplicating it/making it make less sense than just giving a quick pitch about yourself

Fair enough- also bear in mind 9 times out of 10 I'm just talking out of my ass so take what I say with a grain of salt

Make sure you’ve got your 30 sec commercial in case you do get ahold of them! I make it a point to know the product and competitions products inside and out before I act on anything. Good luck

Since you’re a BDR right now you are going to be selling 2.0 “You” to sales leaders who get 100s of applicants and many more messages than ever before. You’re not unique in this tactic anymore, so make it simple and use the call as an opportunity to showcase your cold prospecting skills.

You NEED to nail the first 30 seconds of this process or you’re going to be considered ineffective. You don’t need to be perfect, but you need to stop the manager in their tracks.

Don’t call VPs unless they are the only sales leader. Call the Mid Market, SMB, etc, segment leaders. Maybe directors, but definitely mangers. They get final say in most cases on who they want on their teams. VPs at larger orgs may like you, but they won’t be hiring you.

Thanks for the reply! I was trying to come up with a script that would showcase my cold call skills while still being natural in the situation, but I'm having trouble with what it would actually sound like.

Cant think of a way to approach it that would showcase my cold call skills because I'm not value-selling to solve a problem.

Smth like this is all I can think of - "Hey (name), this is miguelnelson. I know you weren't expecting my call but I applied to the open AE position at x company and was hoping to give you a quick pitch. You got a sec?

Would love a better opener/approach and lmk if that script i wrote sucks. Thank you!!

Just be human. As pbc said, you have one shot. And you won't be the only one doing this, so do what you do when you get someone on the phone - give them the reason you called and ask to have some time.

you are solving a problem here. there is risk in making a hire by cold calling you are easing concerns that you are afraid to do the gritty work and being above it.

I recently received a cold call from a candidate wanting to join my team. I was pretty surprised at first, but after a few moments, I shook my head and was pretty impressed. It got him an interview and even a job offer.

Just be confident, direct and acknowledge that I know you have a busy schedule, but I think I would be a great contribution to your team Etc

I cold-email every manager I'm potentially going to work for. downside is, they often say thanks so much for the cold outreach, I respect the hustle, we'll be in touch soon to schedule an interview and then I apply and never hear back from the company.
