Combat objections - salary negotiation

hello,

I have gotten an offer from a tech start up and am trying to plan how to negotiate it. They have posted the salary range on linkedin as well as the commission %. the range is very good but i still want to be on the high end of course, but they have pitched it as, "well, this is a 30% raise from what you are making today"

I feel dumb for giving them my current salary but too late to change that. I want to say something along the lines of, "i do not want to be benchmarked at my current role and company, based on my experience and past success, i will be able to bring a lot of value to the team and therefore would like to be at the high end of the range being offered publicly for this role.

First time doing a proper salary negotiation for a new offer. Any and all advice is welcome.

Thank you!

They call me Daddy, Sales Daddy
I typically donโ€™t tell them what I am making today. I tell them what I am looking for. โ€œI am targeting positions in the $X rangeโ€. Itโ€™s none of their business what I am making right now.

Moving forward don't ever give out your exact number. Live and learn.

Lesson learned for the next time - prepare to be asked about current salary and have a good answer.

For this, follow braintank's suggestion and do it "in person".

First, understand what similar roles pay.ย  Second, be able to articulate why you deserve that same pay range.ย  Third, tell them that your previous salary is irrelevant because of the first two.ย  Use the analogy of Patrick Mahomes.ย  His rookie contract was $4M /yr.ย  Based on your prospective company's logic, Mahomes should have been happy to accept a $5.2M /yr contract.ย  He got a $45 /yr. becuse that is what he is worth; just like what you are worth if you meet the first two criteria.ย ย

Just finished negotiations for my new role. I used the new post from Bravado with their research of AE salary and OTE and being in the top 10%. Know what youโ€™re worth, and have the numbers to back it up. They can either risk not gaining you as a teammber, or you accept the lower pay than youโ€™re worth and you leave as soon as you get what youโ€™re worth. Which in that case the turnover that will cost them will be much more than what they should have paid you initially.
I think a study I read recently said turnover costs a company 30-70% of the persons salary that left/let go. Do the math and ask if thatโ€™s worth the risk to them.

Not a good first impression but also realize this is more likely a recruiter decision vs. company policy
