I haven't used one in YEARS.
To me, companies that request them are telling me something about what kind of experience I'll have there.
Resumes are enough.

I have not. Does that help you? Maybe put a little more effort into posts and give us more detail as to what your thoughts are as well as the industry.

Yes, it was answered on a surface level. But why is this question important to you? What have you seen? What prompted you to want to ask about it? GIVE MORE DETAIL.

This isn't just directed at you btw, it is directed to a lot of the new people that come in and even some that have been around for a while.

Yes.

There is absolutely no downside to using a cover letter.

Cover letters are as useless as they are necessary to make you stand out in a pool of applicants. People with them typically advance because it makes it look like you put time and effort into it and actually want the position. Most of the time, it's disregarded. In my opinion, take your qualifications listed on your resume, as well as the job descriptions listed for the role you want, and toss them both into ChatGPT and tell it to make you a cover letter out of it using "10 dollar words but with a compassionate tone." After thats done, you can copy and paste it and edit it. Total time spent prepping: 2 minutes. Total time spent tweaking: 3-5 minutes. Boom, saved you an hour of writers block and also uses the key words from the job description to pass their AI/algorithm of barriers to put you in the top line of applicants.

If I have to make one for a post that requires it I'll usually use bard or something to make it quick. Otherwise I never use one - resume should always be enough.

Someone help me better understand this. Why are companies now asking for candidates to share their sexual orientation on the application?

It’s bad enough that they ask for a cover letter, but what does someone being gay, straight, or other have to do with their ability to sell???

DEI checklist. Used to work in HR tech. Higher ups want reports at screens, interviews, offers, etc based on those metrics.

Unsure if actual decisions are made based on that but awards and recognition are giving for those metrics being hit.

Their argument is they they can an inclusive place to work which is a good story on quarterly reports , investors, etc. the term being Theron around is “corporate social responsibility “

Can't say that I've seen this, but if it interferes with the quality of the applicants that move forward, good luck to that company. Honestly it's borderline discriminatory regardless of either way you view it. Identity politics aside, it's none of their business.

Doesn’t hurt to have one and doesn’t take long to write one up. If you can include it I say do it.

The comments are overwhelming in the other direction so I’m curious does it get brought up as you advance in the interviews?

So to others point, in many cases the job is more about who you know and your efforts in networking, reaching out to hiring manager, etc.

But if everything is equal a well worded cover letter might help in your favor.

Again, no one will fault you or take points away for having one. So it’s only upside. Sometimes it’s not a lot, but if there is even a chance it could help, why not do it?
