Depending on your disposable income you may choose brand new over used, luxury brands over store brands.
You may decide to enrol them in no extra-curricular activities or many
The most expensive stuff Straight of the bat, especially things you shouldnโt do cheap: - Formula (if not breastfeeding) - cot and mattress - white noise machine - soluble foods (for when they start to eat)

Holy ned. I had daycare for 12k/year not all that long ago. With provided breakfast & lunch. Unbelievable that youโre at more than twice that. Unreal.

Diapers, food, formula, etc. is one thing. The main thing is daily regular child care , because if you need a nanny or daycare that is what gets most expensive.

Daycare, food, house size, college fund, etc all have to be factored in. The number could be millions and I wouldnโt trade it for the world though

My guy is around 7 months and formula is fucking insane. Including tax it's ~$60 Canadian every 4 days. We look for sales and stock up. Diapers get expensive, even at Costco. Ditto for wipes.
He's our first, so there were a lot of major purchases. We got a really good stroller so that was about $2K with tax. Same with high chair so it was close to $700. Infant car seat was like $600 and we'll have to get the bigger one soon.
Crib was like $800 but some people go to Pottery Barn and drop $2K. For me, the things with moving parts/safety concerns are what you should spend the real money on.
We were fortunate to be gifted a lot of clothes.
Thank God Canada is moving towards $10/day day care for the most part. The challenge is actually getting a spot. I have friends that were spending over $2K/month.

Letโs include housing cost too. We were renting a small 2 bedroom place when our 2nd son was born. The bedrooms were 100sqft, so barely enough room for a cot, not enough for a 2nd bed. Which means having to move. We were living in one of the most expensive cities in North America, but had lucked out on this place and we had very cheap rent at $1650. Prices went crazy after we were locked in at that price, so moving anywhere with a 3rd bedroom at least would have doubled our rent. That eats up the $20k right there

I worked for a guy once who had 4 girls and then just had a boy. He wants his son in the NHL, and he was even born in the right month, so as soon as the kid can stand up he has a plan that will cost around $50k/year to get him all the training & equipment to make it happen. He expects that it will get more expensive as he gets in his teens, up to like $100k/year. I sure hope the kid likes hockey!

My nanny is like $1300 a week, plus a monthly metro card , a couple of weeks vacation a year, and taxes on top. That doesnโt include taxes, food, clothing, events, etc. donโt forget about school, which is another fresh hell.

I don't have a kid however I have nephews. From siblings, it's absolutely above 20k for daycare per child by itself. Not to mention everything else associated with raising a child.

I have 3. Itโs not terrible once you realize you donโt need to buy all the toys, etc. We use cloth diapers 75% of the time. Our highest cost is probably snacks for them and then dinner food. They love eggs so we got chickens. Not necessarily a huge cost savings, but itโs cool to have pets for them to care for that give us something back.
If I send them to private school, Iโll probably be spending $15-30k a year on that. Iโm in the process of setting up a Montessori/classical co-op, so depending on the teacher costs, etc. I may actually spend less.

This depends how bullish you want to be on allocating costs. Do you divide the delay of the house you would have versus the house do have because of the need for extra rooms? Etc?
Do you live by free childcare/family/friends?
My wife and I make a shitton but it melts away pretty quickly.
Also, averse medical conditions play in pretty heavily.
