General Corp Severance Tracker 2023

Howdy All,

As you have all seen, layoffs have been rampant over the last year. We've seen many a fallen savage. Some companies have treated their fallen better than others... And its made me wonder why we dont talk about severance enough... I think a big reason is because we dont have data around it! Soooo,

I've created (the help from Bravado) an Airtable to start tracking this stuff.

If you have someone an unreported Severance I'd love to get it so I can add it to the table. All data in anonymous and scrubbed of personal info.

Thats my hope. I feel like one day companies could use severance as a recruiting/benefit package... No one likes talking about divorce during the honeymoon phase, but I think its important to be pragmatic.

I honestly didn't even know that negotiating severance was even a thing before seeing people post about it here. I'm quite ignorant in that regard.

This really should be a webinar/masterclass/whatever sometime very soon fort he War Room.

I read this the other day Bro - way to have the serious face on for it. Good points and def things I wouldn't have thought to bring up, but I will be doing in every future interview b/c it's the only way to cover our asses in a shit show like it is now.

The couple times I have done it, they have been difficult conversations especially since it was obvious the HR person, who was so proudly walking me through the Offer Letter, had never had anyone talk about a severance package before actually being hired.

Its a hard conversation - its a pre-nup with your future employer. But if you phrase it right - like a no-lose deal with your future employer because they will never fire you (right!), its a great potential win.

I submitted! But I would also recommend including a question of whether they were able to negotiate or not and whether this information is pre or post negotiation

This is really interesting to see. Iโ€™ve never been laid off before, but now I feel like I know what I might expect or at least know what is standard. (I donโ€™t plan on being laid off)

I would be really interesting in some sort of list of labor laws that protect severance packages, such as the signing of a non-compete to receive the severance, like my last company tried to do. I didnโ€™t sign cuz it basically would have kicked me out of industry, and regardless of what right I had I canโ€™t fight s billion dollar company. Knowing your rights as an employee in your state I think is just as important during the severance stage.
