Going international

Has anyone in the US taken an international role and worked in a different country? How did you get your employer to allow you to do it? How did it work out for you?

I don't think you "get your employer to allow you to do it", rather you look for an employer that wants to sell internationally....

Not me personally, but a friend of mine worked in the USA for a big pharma player from Germany and then transferred to Germany. After three years in Germany, he met a girl from Switzerland and them moved with her to Switzerland and now lives in Basel.

Usually that will happen if it is an international company, I don't think it typically is going to be something they just will allow you to do

I've done it. Took about 2 years of planning - you need to work closely with your management team to put together a plan.

I have not, but based on colleagues' experience it's easier done internally if your current employer has offices in different countries. My colleague in question was french, applied to the France office and worked things out with our manager

EDIT : Are you talking about being transferred internationally or working remotely from a different company while being employed in the US?

Yes. I identified and opportunity for my product, researched the market, target users, demographics, legal implications (including customs, licenses, shipping). I also spoke with possible targets and gather intel on each country (budget, need, timeline, etc).m and put it on a nice proposal for my Manager. Since it answered all their questions, I was approved to go after it. Don't forget the cultural implications of each country.

Definitely late to the party here but for anyone looking to do something like this your company can look into an Employer of Record (EOR). It'll allow you to move abroad and allow them to stay compliant with tax, payroll etc. in whatever country you move to.
