Internal v. External managers

I've found in my sales career that there are two types of managers; 1. Those that are great internal leaders, organizers and motivators, and 2. Those that are terrible managers but add tons of value to external meetings and are rock star sellers. The latter is likely the IC who gets promoted to manager when they shouldn't.

In my experience there has really been no in between... Any of you have similar experiences, or some diamonds in the rough? Would love to work for someone who was amazing with clients AND amazing at the internal, managerial stuff too.

Which one is your manager?

Its a mixed bag. In my experience, good managers / leaders are hard to find because there are so many factors you need to have in check like you described.
