Interview presentation

Looking for your opinions and preference on these 2 approaches.

Many sales interviews seem to include a role play scenario to a panel.  The ones I've been a part of recently are set as a discovery call to assist panel in seeing a reps approach to the call, how they ask questions, handle objections, etc.

As a seller which is better:
a) run the call with your current product/ solution/company as the buyer's interest
b) run the call as if you were selling for the company you are applying to

I would stick to the knowledge you have so you aren't digging yourself a hole for them to bury you in. Plus, it has the added benefit of not trying to sound smart talking to someone who invented the thing you're trying to sell. They might not know shit about what you sell now and you can sound like boss regardless of content.

NEVER try to sell the other company's solution. It rarely works out. There have been several posts about other people's experiences trying to do this and almost all have ended ***badly***.

Sell what you know. You know how best to approach it, the questions to ask, and how to move them toward the close.

Every single one I have one is selling their product. It forces you to do more research and prep to learn their product and a customer story

Don't sell the interview company's solution. I've done this once before and it didn't go well. Sell what you know and let your skills shine within that.

You will never know their product the way they know their product.

I had to pitch their product once. I was given a company (which turned out to be real) as well as personas (also real people), and asked to create a high level presentation.

Since I did my homework on the company, the people, and the product, plus I knew some history, I aced the preso, but it was awkward. The interviewing team was very good, so it was a smooth process, but I did not like having to do it.

It was for an internal/lateral move, and was mandated by my former employer to “even the playing field for internal and external candidates, but I sure hope they stopped that foolishness.

I’ve never understood why companies have this as a round where they ask you to sell THEIR product. Honey, my sweet baby, if I knew your product so well, I’d be on that side of the panel NOT asking this question.

I’d sell my product, if I were you. To be good sellers, you’ve to be really comfortable and proud of your product / offerings. You’ve to believe what you sell.

If you don’t - It shows.

That said - my partner aced his interview when he was asked to sell THEIR product. That’s him though.

There are pros/cons both.

I always try to sell their products because they I get to learn their product and they take me a bit more seriously because of the additional effort.

It depends, the one you're better at illustrating more just go for it.
If you think it's just 50/50 still, go with selling your current solution obviously cuz that's the product you already know, pitched many times so you most probably would be able to make the DISCO on it way more efficiently!

Of course, sell what you`re currently selling.

Definitely sell your current solution. It’s a whole lot easier to impress them with a product they don’t know and you know better rather something you don’t know and they know inside out.
