Job search guidance + 1 step away from PIP?

Hello Savages,

Today's kind of a shitty day. Layoffs, downturns, you know what's up. I had a call with my director and he forwarded me a letter basically saying my comp isn't changing, but it's a formal notice of "needs improvement". It was a vague explanation from a former manager who isn't even here anymore. Surprisingly, my director said not to worry too much because getting promoted and closing a deal in the first 2 weeks of my promotion is a huge step that I should be proud of(Taking that with a grain of salt)

Nevertheless, I'm not making any more or less money than I was in Q4, which doesn't say much since I barely made any commish to begin with.

Now, I've started applying for other jobs and started an AE framework course by Kyle Asay as well, but for those who are applying for jobs currently, are you shooting from the hip, or are you methodically reaching out to the hiring manager, or a combo of both?

My next steps are to start networking within my industry, work on my resume(Which I've done quite a bit over the holidays), and start applying for SMB/MM AE and AM roles.

Any suggestions on the next steps that I can take?

It doesn't seem like you're a step away from a PIP if you just closed a deal, but maybe I'm reading it wrong.

Regardless, you're smart to have some feelers out there just in case your job is actually on the bubble.

And if you're serious about job searching, you should absolutely treat it like its your real job and that you're pursuing it like you would a sales opportunity. If you find a job which really speaks to you, you must find the HM and reach out directly, as well as do the obligatory online submission.

I agree with this too. Unless your Director does sandwich feedback (negative-positive-negative) in very serious conversations. I wouldn't say your are one-step away based on the praise of promoting and a quick close.

Curious why did the former manager leave? If it was on bad terms, my guess is leadership will use them as a scapegoat for poor performance causing less pressure on you.

However, if you aren't making as much as you want. I don't blame you for looking for new roles.

I agree. Sounds like your annual review, with a comment the director passed on that is so generic and meaningless I'm not sure why he passed it on.

So, you got promoted in Q4, no change for your first year, which honestly is what I'd expect. Most reps aren't going to get a salary adjustment 1 quarter after they've moved into a new role. It would be very unusual.

If you're not making money, is it because your base is low, or are opportunities just not coming your way? What's happening there?

The latter. Base is ok, but I'm trying to really gain more closing experience and expand my book of business.

If I can say I closed 'x' by 'y' date and have several opps that were sourced net new or expanded upon, that's the focus currently. The industry is in a downturn and I'm really just trying to focus on building up as much as I can so when I'm applying for roles/and or if I get laid off, I can say I've had a solid run.

Youโ€™re being very thoughtful about this, and I really hope youโ€™re able to get the experience you want under your belt. Itโ€™s slowed down for me as well, and Iโ€™m shocked at how fast I get rusty. Things like forgetting how to speakโ€ฆand I get paid to talk for a living! I do much better when Iโ€™m almost too busy. There is a point, I swear. And thatโ€™s that it may be more difficult to build up those reflexive sales muscles when you donโ€™t get as many leads to work. Try not to get discouraged. Work on best practices and polish so that you have given yourself a structure for busier times. Get used to updating your CRM religiously, etc., as those things ultimately matter.

Youโ€™re following the right step. Additionally, I would request the peers for a coffee chat.

All the best !

You are on the right path for sure - networking and applying for other roles.
That said, you are not one step away from PIP. Your director wouldn't have given words of encouragement if you were.

Is it really a promotion if your comp doesn't change?

It changed in the beginning of q4 when I got promoted. Q1 there's no change.
