Pissed off Recruiter?

Hey my Savages in the recruiting space,

I took a call from a recruiter today. He dropped the name of the company and then asked me to sign a confidentiality agreement.

I agreed but am interested in the role so immediately sent a personal email to the VP. She handles sales and customer success so I sent a short video about some positive customer feedback I recieved on a deal.

Fast forward 2 hours and I get the confidentiality agreement. Boldy outlined is that I'm not allowed to contact the client for the next 12 months without permission

So I just tell the recruiter that this is standard operating procedure and let sleeping dogs lie? Fwiw I have no reason to go around him and really wasn't trying to do something sneaky.

Yeah. Just another savage protecting their commission. Good thing you got the video/message in before, prolly made a good impact on the VP

I was thinking about it today too. I'd probably turn the role down if they tried to screw him out his commission.

Like want to stamp a red flag for a company. Shenigans like that 100% mean you'll get screwed on a comp plan at some point

Agree with both these points.

They mess with his commission what's stopping them from messing with yours.

Plus a lot of recruiters HUSTLE. There are more bad ones out there than good, but the good ones earn their living.

Agreed, some agencies hence try to sign up for exclusivity contractsย

Yeah standard. Itโ€™s how she gets paid.

Exactly this. Companies often try and screw agencies/recruiters out of their ~20%.

As a former recruiter, they should have set this expectation with you from the beginning, but I also understand why they would be upset. At this point, the company could tell the recruiter that communication happened with you prior to the recruiter sending your name over, making you the company's candidate and not paying the recruiter.ย

Also, because everyone always asks, THIS IS WHY RECRUITERS WILL TRY NOT TO TELL YOU THE COMPANY NAME INITIALLY

Rights to represent/Confidentiality agreements are pretty typical in most spaces. The lengths differ. Some are just for that singular role. It's so you can't go poached by another recruiter working the same role or have the client go over the recruiter's head and cut them out of the deal.ย

Obviously, you had no malicious intent but even in this scenario, the client will often see the opportunity to cut out the recruiter and solely communicate with you.

This smells like disco fanny. Tuna alike. Do recruiters often make you sign them? Personally Iโ€™ve never had that!

Yeah. Plus they didn't care at all. He just wants to be paid

I think it depends on the contract they have with the client. Exclusive or not

Seems you did it without ill will so can't really blame you, but I'm imaging you lost them at least 6K commission.ย

Imagine that coming out of your pocket.

100% a fair statement, but I've spoken with the firm since this and they are completely fine with this.

Mostly because I started the video by saying "Johnny with Firm will be passing my info to you shortly, but..." so I clearly gave them credit.

Iโ€™ve learned that no managers will understand what youโ€™re doing, but that a good SDR-AE combo is super powerful.

Great approach. Only problem is that if they arenโ€™t setting meeting with the lower level folks, eventually their boss will start to say why are all these connects not leading to meetings.
