Ramping Commish

Oyyy sales fam

What's standard commish pay out / guarantee during ramp for most other Enterprise AE folks?

Just started at a new start-up and about 6 month deal cycles (150-500k deals) and they're saying they don't pay for ramping period... trying to take some market data to them to tell them they're clowns and that I don't work for free. Clearly there to close deals and get paid but previous roles have had commish pay outs during ramp so wanted to get a gauge.

This is one of those things that you need to flush out in the interview process. You're already in now, so a little late to pivot unless you can get them to agree to a Rev target to end your ramp period, rather than a defined amount of time (6 months).

In the past, most companies I have been part of have a two-prong ramp period like this

- ex. 1-year or $750k in rev to unlock commission.
- ex. 15 CW opportunities in first 9 months, regardless of Rev

- ex. Set 30 meetings and Qualify 50% of them in first 6 mo's

Yeah, I have a base and OTE - it's a very small company and the CEO didn't have specific metrics to track (as I'm basically building that for them) so nothing in my contract but more so just looking for general feedback on what most businesses do / AEs have had happen.

Previously I had a ramping goal similar to top of funnel / building pipeline (your example of 30 meetings and qualify).

Just trying to gather some intel on what's normal to take to him and have as an example that this is what the industry generally does. Any info is great!

Yup - I know a lot of folks that say the same and have had similar experiences in the past.

Do you have a base salary?  Or are you expected to have 6months of living expenses at the ready to live on while you toil away for them?  I have seen it before, but usually the sales cycle is 1-3 months (like residential real estate).

If you have a base salary - some place do a ramp and others don't.  That's something you/they should have covered in salary negotiation.  My current gig wasn't planning to pay me a ramp till I brought it up in negotiations and they said ok (and I had them put the amounts and dates in the offer letter).

I feel like a lot of ramped quotas are way too overly complicated, but the G of all G’s Bateman crushed it way up there
